Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–When not serving up French fries and gravy to students, Lunch Lady escapes to her secret kitchen lair to lead the life of a crime fighter. Using an assortment of lunch-themed gadgets (created by her sidekick Betty), she is definitely a quirky superhero. Tipped off by the Breakfast Bunch (three students who discovered Lunch Lady's crime-fighting alter ego in Book 1), she attempts to foil the plans of the evil League of Librarians, who seek to destroy all video games. The black-and-white pen-and-ink illustrations have splashes of yellow in nearly every panel. The clean layout, featuring lots of open space, is well suited for the intended audience. Terrence, Hector, and Dee become more developed in this second installment in the series, especially Dee, who asserts herself as the strong-willed leader of the group. The winking references to book fairs, read-a-thon enrollment, and media specialists fit well with the story line. With its appealing mix of action and humor, this clever, entertaining addition to the series should have wide appeal.–Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI END --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Action! Silliness! Pictures galore! It's no wonder that comic books and graphic novels are a big hit with kids. We've loved how authors artists are creating fun graphic stories for younger readers. This new series will find many fans among 1st through 3rd graders looking for a fun adventure in their comics.

In this second book of the series, our secret crime-fighting duo takes on the evil schemes of the school librarians. Kids will love the plot, as the librarians try to destroy all video games and achieve world domination. The snazzy gadgets continue, with Taco-vision Night Goggles, Hover Pizzas and Sonic Boom Juice Boxes. I loved how the librarians unleashed creatures from stories to battle Lunch Lady and her gang.

I especially liked how Krosoczka created an action-packed comic book with a goofiness that makes it perfect for this younger set. This doesn't have any of the dark undertones that some graphic novels or comic superhero stories have. This is not a book with a lot of character development, but I think its purpose is to hook readers and make them laugh.

As a reading tutor I am always looking for high interest books for my dyslexic students. This series of books is perfect--it's funny and has a lot of lively pictures of the cafeteria Lunch Lady saving the day, plus the words used are a good mix of mainly easy and with some challenging ones thrown in too. I have a very smart eleven year old student who can only read at the first or early second grade level and he loves this book. It takes him a long time, but not only can he read almost all of it himself, I have to take the book out of his hands at the end of our session because he is completely engrossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book my son and daughter both enjoy., January 15, 2012
This review is from: Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians (Paperback)
It's not easy to find books my son and daughter both enjoy, but the Lunch Lady series hits the right note of action + humor that keeps them both laughing and reading. I think they're funny too. Love the gadgets. Good job!
