This review is from: Lung Fung Restaurant (DVD)
I chose this movie as my wife is Chinese, and I am an American, and being married to a Chinese, I have have been trying to also expose myself to her culture, not just having her except my culture. During this time, I have purchased many Chinese films, and have to say that I think I look forward to watching them now more than my wife. This being said, we both give this film a "thumbs-down". As a matter of fact, we actually threw the film away after we watched it, not wanting it in our collection.
The main reason we purchased the film was that it starred Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shoalin Soccer), and from the cover looked like one of his enjoyable films. We have many of his films, some great, some just ok, but always entertaining. This one was not. The film basically is about a man who is released from prison, now working at a restaurant. He was part of a gang in China, and shortly after his release becomes involved with them again. Stephen Chow plays his old friend from the gang, and plays a real "jerk", spouting off the "F" word every chance he gets. He's like the acquaintance that never goes away, but is always there- irritating! Anyway, the man released from prison falls in love with a "call-girl", and the film basically revolves around their shallow, dysfunctional relationship. Boring and irritating, I kept waiting for it to change....only to finish with an ending in which my wife and I both looked at each other and said, "that's it" !?!?!?! |
