if the indigo girls never existed, i'd still be a huge fan of amy's solo work (although i'm sure it would be different if that were the case). amy's a wonderful type of musician-- she's a songwriter (which is to say, she taps her inner reserve for initial inspiration) and a collaborator (which is to say her music is born of interplay with other musicians, other forces ["with a little joe strummer in her dna"]).

i love the opening song "when you're gone, you're gone" so much that i don't like to listen to it too much. the music strikes an incredible mood, like a summer night with nothing to do, driving around with friends with mischief on your minds. it's absolutely incredible. it feels distinct from this era of music somehow, and like it might of been more appropriate in the 70s. obviously, this is all subjective, but what review isn't.

the true brilliance of a song-maker, for me, comes out in the subtle nuances-- which might have been improvised at first but are preserved in the crafting of the final cut. this album is stamped all over with them. from the little hummed melody before the chorus of "lung of love". the banjo over the bridge leading up to the chorus in "crying in the wilderness". the off-beat drumming in "i didn't." the backing vocals throughout the record. the elements of each song are so wonderful and organically precise-- it's like if paul simon wrote a punkish rock record. thanks to amy for another great record! it might be might favorite of the four! though they're all special.

Glow is a real gem, especially the harmony of the last verse (with Amy backing herself). I Didn't showcases both Amy's amazing voice and masterful songwriting. Little Revolution is great catchy self-affirming tune. After listening regularly for a couple weeks, Crying in the Wilderness is emerging as my favorite--love the banjo. The Rock Is My Foundation is a departure from the rest of the record and Brandi Carlile's vocals (and what sounds like her influence/collaboration on the arrangement) shine.

Lung of Love is less raw and rebellious than Amy's previous solo records. I wouldn't say it's similar to her Indigo Girls work but it's possibly more accessible to IG fans.

To sum up my feelings about this record, it has me seriously considering trekking 3-1/2 hrs. to see her play these songs live with her band!

Sorry to gush, but I'm someone who has loved Indigo Girls for years, but resisted Amy as a solo performer. I couldn't imagine liking the "punk sensibility" solo work as well as I do the IG stuff. But I do. Granted, it helps that it's gotten less punk through the years. This music might be more out there than IG songs, but they're clearly in the same ballpark. Prom might be my favorite, but Lung of Love is a more than worthy effort from a mature artist at the height of her game. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Amy Ray's solo albums burst with solid melodies and revelatory lyrics. On each disc we get to witness her stretch and feel about for the next musical inspiration, and Lungs of Love is no exception. It's a wonderful example of an artist who gets better with every song she writes.

Great CD, fantastic packaging, great songs. Amy song writing is just getting better and better. I don't know what ani was expecting but this exceeded anything I could have hoped for. It has been on constant rotation for a month - a new favourite!

This Amy Ray cd adds to my Indigo Girls collection, as they have been my favorite group since 1992! Their music is amazing, both collectively and/or solo cds!

Amy Ray rocks. I love the Indigo Girls, but Amy has her own style and it ROCKS. Don't know which song I like best, but Little Revolution is great!
