i love the opening song "when you're gone, you're gone" so much that i don't like to listen to it too much. the music strikes an incredible mood, like a summer night with nothing to do, driving around with friends with mischief on your minds. it's absolutely incredible. it feels distinct from this era of music somehow, and like it might of been more appropriate in the 70s. obviously, this is all subjective, but what review isn't.
the true brilliance of a song-maker, for me, comes out in the subtle nuances-- which might have been improvised at first but are preserved in the crafting of the final cut. this album is stamped all over with them. from the little hummed melody before the chorus of "lung of love". the banjo over the bridge leading up to the chorus in "crying in the wilderness". the off-beat drumming in "i didn't." the backing vocals throughout the record. the elements of each song are so wonderful and organically precise-- it's like if paul simon wrote a punkish rock record. thanks to amy for another great record! it might be might favorite of the four! though they're all special.
Lung of Love is less raw and rebellious than Amy's previous solo records. I wouldn't say it's similar to her Indigo Girls work but it's possibly more accessible to IG fans.
To sum up my feelings about this record, it has me seriously considering trekking 3-1/2 hrs. to see her play these songs live with her band!

Amy Ray has been bubbling under my surface for a little while now. Mainly as the more talented half of the Indigo Girls but more recently her solo work has been on my radar. Read morePublished on May 24, 2012 by Alan N.
