Even though he abandoned his wife and four children for the life of a self-described "savage" in the South Seas, Gauguin wrote to them constantly. This contradictory and brilliant painter is the subject of a catalog for a recent show at the Metropolitan Museum that celebrates Gauguin collecting in New York State. It is unique because rather than focusing on a theme in the artist's work, it includes a whole range of his paintings from both public and private sources. All the works on display are reproduced in the catalog, which offers 134 color and 88 black-and-white illustrations of Gauguin's paintings, sculptures, drawings, woodcuts, and watercolors. The first chapters, which are interspersed with quotations from his many letters, give a chronological account of the artist's remote venues in the South Seas. Later chapters review the role various New York collectors played in establishing Gauguin's reputation and key shows that catapulted him into public consciousness. The final chapter offers technical analysis of the paintings, providing insight into how a major museum appraises the work. This book demonstrates the contributions New Yorkers have made to recognizing this great French painter. Recommended for special, public, and academic libraries.
