Book Description

September 2, 1992 088385502X 978-0883855027
Mathematicians and laymen alike have always been fascinated by simple numbers. This book is an introduction to a mythical book which might go under the name The Book of the Integers, that has on page n all of the interesting properties of the integer n. This introductory book stems from the collection of many years' casual accumulation of numerical facts, especially from the theory of numbers. No deep or profound mathematical background is required to understand the material, however much of it is sufficient out of the mainstream that even professional mathematicians may be unfamiliar with the results. There are many references to the literature to enable the reader to track down further information.

Mathematicians and laymen alike have always been fascinated by simple numbers. The material is unusual sufficient to surprise the professional but simple enough for laymen to understand.

4.0 out of 5 stars No bait needed for this lure!, March 25, 2000
This review is from: Lure of the Integers (MAA Spectrum) (Paperback)
What a perfect title! All mathematicians, independent of their specialty or level of expertise, are to some extent followers of the philosophy of Leopold Kronecker. As you may recall, he authored the famous phrase, "God made the integers, all else is the work of man." Hooked a bit more than most, the author presents his extensive collection of interesting facts about the positive integers.
The properties vary widely in difficulty. While some require an extensive background, the majority can be understood by anyone with a generalized understanding of mathematics. References to each fact are given, and there is some internal cross-referencing. The Journal of Recreational Mathematics is well represented and proofs of any kind are rarely given. The majority of the material concerns the integers less than 100.
A joy to read and ponder, this book is a welcome addition to the body of mathematical literature. It belongs in every mathematical library.
