Book Description

September 2006
Discover the richness of the Catholic imagination and explore the meaning of saints in history and today.

All Christians share ancient traditions of making saints and practicing faith in the midst of a cloud of witnesses. We also share the heritage of the Protestant Reformation and the sometimes radical change in attitudes toward saints that resulted from those upheavals. What does this shared history tell us about what it means to be a saint today?

This compelling guide includes profiles of ancient, medieval and modern figures, East and West, the sublime and the unusual, with special chapters exploring:
*Differences between Catholic and Protestant imaginations.
*How saints were made in the past and how they are today.
*Devotions and spiritual practices.
*The radical triumph of the Protestant idea.
*Miracles, doubt, and belief.
*Tears, pain, foolishness, apparitions, stigmatas, and more strange, saintly behavior.

Full of colorful characters, wise insights, and profound appreciation for faith, The Lure of Saints is an exploration of how exemplary, and sometimes unusual, men and women have impacted both the Church and the world. Also included are the personal reflections of other religious teachers and writers who have daily practices of relating to the saints, including Abbot M. Basil Pennington, Mitch Finley, Fr. Murray Bodo, Rev. Mary E. Haddad, and others. Black and white photos and illustrations, a helpful glossary of terms, annotated reflections on resources for further reading, and indexes by subject and by name make this the ideal book for experiencing the wisdom and wonder of the saints in history, and today.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sweeney (Road to Assisi), who grew up in a fundamentalist Christian church believing that Catholic and Orthodox Christians were in need of salvation, honestly admits that his own discovery of the spirituality of the saints is not without serious doubts: "I am still a profound skeptic, only a partial convert." He writes that he's drawn to the saints so "I might learn to see differently," and build a deeper relationship with God. He offers a somewhat piecemeal tapestry of everything from how a saint is made (a campaign for the ideal patron saint of the Internet is still ongoing, he notes), and the place of bodily relics, to Mary, who "cuts to the root of the separation of Protestant from Catholic." There is a satisfying blend of the concrete (prayers, a list of feast days, 10 steps to living like a saint) with Sweeney's personal observations and historical information. He doesn't sidestep some of the troubling aspects of saints, including their images on trinkets and kitsch, and their seeming "weirdness" (e.g. Angela of Foligno partaking of lepers' sores). While Protestant readers may remain unconvinced about the place of saints in their faith, they will also come away with a deeper understanding of, and sympathy for, why saints play an important role in the lives of Catholic and Orthodox Christians. More About the Author

Jon M. Sweeney has lived in Vermont since 1997. He has three kids, one in college, one in high school, and a new baby girl. He writes and reflects on spiritual matters in books, articles, blogs, and other media, and he works in book publishing.

Jon was the cofounder and editor-in-chief of SkyLight Paths Publishing for several years. Since 2004 he has been the associate publisher at Paraclete Press.

His spiritual and religious life continues to evolve, and much of Jon's writing is about this. His first 20 years were spent as an involved evangelical (a story he told in the memoir Born Again and Again); he then spent 22 years as an active Episcopalian (see The Lure of Saints and Cloister Talks, among other books); and in the fall of 2009 he was received into the Catholic Church. Today, he is a practicing Catholic (of a more monastic variety), but his most regular spiritual practice is Jewish, as he prays regularly with his wife, a rabbi, and they keep a Jewish home.

Sweeney often says that he loves the church, the synagogue, and other aspects of organized religion, and wants to see these organisms survive (he loves religion; he's not just spiritual), but he also is not interested in doing things to simply prop up falling institutions. In all of his writing, Jon is drawn to the ancient and medieval (see Strange Heaven, Beauty Awakening Belief, The Road to Assisi, and the forthcoming The Pope Who Quit).

Sweeney has a special passion for Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. He has written several books on Francis and Clare including Light in the Dark Ages: The Friendship of Francis and Clare of Assisi, a History Book Club and BOMC selection, The St. Francis Prayer Book, and The St. Clare Prayer Book. He has also written books on embodied prayer, the Virgin Mary, and other subjects. His most recent are Almost Catholic: An Appreciation of the History, Practice, and Mystery of Ancient Faith, published by Jossey-Bass, and Verily, Verily: The King James Bible--400 Years of Influence and Beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise, January 29, 2010

I bought this at the local Catholic bookstore because of an interest in learning more about the Saints. As a recent convert to the Catholic faith I was looking for a light introduction and this certainly filled the need. The author's Anglican background and easy writing style make for an informative and enjoyable foray into the lives of Saints he has chosen to focus on. This is an earnest examination of what it means to be a Saint as well as in general terms what it means to be Protestant or Catholic. I thought it inspirational and wouldn't hesitate to read another work by this author.
