Book Description

"PATRICIA RICE IS A MASTER STORYTELLER." —MARY JO PUTNEY, New York Times bestselling author of A Distant Magic

Her voice was a curse...

When Dylan "Oz" Oswin's son is kidnapped, the high-powered producer will do anything to get him back. Desperately following an anonymous tip, he seeks help from a former child singing sensation called Syrene, only to find she's vowed never to sing again. Immune to her voice but not her charm, Oz is convinced she holds the key to his son's disappearance—and he'll stop at nothing to make her break her vow.

Only he can make her sing ...

She knows the devastation her talent can bring. There's more than a child's life at stake, but Syrene cannot unleash her dangerous siren's voice upon the world, even for a man who is impossible to deny...

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical Love Story captured my heart January 13, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My Rating: 4.5 stars: Loved it - enthusiastically recommend (A)

Dylan Ives is a highly successful LA producer with a heavy heart. His 4-year-old son was kidnapped a year ago, a year after his wife ran away (and subsequently died) with the boy, fearful the boy was in danger. Dylan refused to believe his son was dead, so when a he receives a mysterious text from a person called "the Librarian" that a former child star can help find his missing son, Dylan tracks her down.

Pippa James is a secluded children's author, hiding from her destructive past. At the age of twelve, she was Syrene, a singing sensation, and by age 18 she was an emotional wreck, widow, and has-been child star. She believes her Voice is evil and will cause utter despair. She thinks her Voice turned her teenage husband to drugs and his early demise. She hides in the mountains, keeping her singing and Voice safe from the outside world.

Lure of Song and Magic is a spin-off of sorts of Ms. Rice's Magic series, a historically-set romance series with a hint of magic. Lure focuses on the descendants of the original characters, but is a stand alone story and does not require any knowledge of the original series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Right from the start, I was under Pippa's spell; she captured me as she does the hearts and minds of friends and strangers alike. Pippa does have a gift, and with the help of years of isolation and Dylan's persistence, she learns that her Voice can be a joyful, beautiful thing.

Pippa and Dylan's love grew from an honest place. It wasn't love at first site, nor was it an "I hate you, therefore I love you" cliche. The characters are written with their hearts on their sleeves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Paranormal and A Lot Lovely February 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
~* 4.5 Stars *~
Oz may look like the quintessential California surfer boy, but Dylan "Oz" Oswin is a high-powered LA producer with a no holds barred attitude and a grim determination to do whatever it takes to get his son back. Even if that means throwing good sense to the wind and following the breadcrumbs of cryptic text messages sent to him by a mysterious third party as they lead him straight to a former child singing sensation. One who had a huge, destructive, and very public melt down years ago, then completely dropped off the map and hasn't been heard from since.

It's been a year since Donal was taken by the nanny Oz had hired to care for the toddler. He didn't even know if his son still lived. All he knew is that he would turn over every rock on the planet, bully anyone and everyone who could possibly help find him if he has to, do whatever it took, follow weird text messages from a possible lunatic who calls himself the Librarian, but he would find his child. Even if he had to exploit a young recluse to do it.

Phillipa James writes children's books and keeps herself far removed from the public eye. Her life now is as distant from her years as the singing sensation Syrene as she could possibly make it. She is too dangerous to be allowed in public. There is too much risk. She's already killed one person and witnessed the devastating affects her Voice has on the masses. When she sings, it's a siren's call that can't be denied. Even speaking can cause people to do things they wouldn't normally do. She must stay far away from everyone.

Even at the risk of a young boy's life and the sanity of his devastatingly handsome but overbearing father.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm Completely Conflicted January 4, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm familiar with Patricia Rice's books but not with her Magic series. I don't know if having read that series would have solved my problems with this book or not. On the surface, this is a straightforward contemporary novel about a Hollywood producer and a burned out former child star. It's really more about Pippa being a lost member of a magical clan, able to control other humans with her singing, like a sea siren. (Hence, her stage name, Syrene). I appreciated the unique individuals and the sense of place was perfect, but I never engaged with this book. I couldn't take Pippa or Oz very seriously, who they are is so determined by events outside of themselves that I found side characters far more engaging. There was also too much cross over from Evil Genius, not in the sense of actual characters but in their aspects. Martial arts expert dork girl, reclusive all seeing internet figure, loving but not close family, never quite knowing where the plot focus is. I actually liked Evil Genius more than this book. This isn't a bad book, I just felt like pieces of the puzzle were missing. Oz shifts from a man whose business would fall apart if he left LA to a man who can easily leave LA. Pippa stays pretty consistent, but she's downright weird. I would consider a book with Oz's brother, and I still appreciate Patricia Rice, but I may not be meant for paranormals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong characters carry this story..... February 24, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Dylan "Oz" Oswin is a successful television producer who is led via a series of odd messages to El Padre, CA in the search for his missing son. In the desert town, he finds former tween singing star Syrene living a reclusive life as children's book author Pippa James. Convinced that Pippa is key to finding his son, Oz persuades her to let him produce a television show featuring her books, which serves to keep him close to her and whatever secrets she might have.

Pippa is convinced her voice is evil - she may sing like an angel but the results are disastrous, causing turmoil and destruction in her wake. All of her life has been chaos, from the death of her parents when she was a toddler to the implosion of her teenage marriage. Resolved to never sing in public again, Pippa resists being put in the limelight until a local child wanders off and only her voice brings him back. Once shown how her voice can be useful, she agrees to help Oz find his son, up to a point. There's an attraction between them she can't deny, and he's the one person who seems immune to the terrible effects of her beautiful voice.

The mysterious Librarian continues to send messages, leading the pair to find a woman who knows more about Pippa then anyone else. As Pippa learns there are others with unique talents like hers, she feels less isolated and more curious about her gifts. Yet another message sends Pippa and Oz to Bakersfield where Oz hopes to finally find his son. The problem is Pippa must perform a specific song to an audience of adoring fans. Despite Pippa's connection to Oz and his son, she is convinced that her talent is too dangerous for her to become part of a loving relationship. Will Oz find his son only to lose Pippa?
