eseential for fans of BM or experimental music,

A soulful, emotional, darkened black metal journey into the depths of Wrest's psyche. Just as brilliant, and even more unconventional, than his Leviathan work.

A new definition of black metal,

If you're looking for pure, aggressive, fast, intense black metal, maybe you should skip this album.
If you appreciate black metal that is not afraid to move into quiet and dreadfully ominous periods of song, I'd highly recommend this. 'Lurker of Chalice' combines the discordant and dark sounds of American Black Metal with an even darker ambient feeling. It even goes so far as to incorporate elements of psychedelia. Listen to this album in a quiet place, and I expect you will feel as though you have entered a different world, that you have been transformed into something radically different. It's all just the atmosphere of the album of course, but it achieves perhaps one of the finest atmospheres in black metal.

First of all let me say that there are only 777 of these out there so grab them if you can!!
Second is this: this is perhaps one of the best albums ever made in black metal history. Period. Argue if you want but it shows how much deeper Wrest can take his music. All through the album you have a deep sense that he has a real feel for every element he puts into it. Every time he adss a music element it feels like he put real thought into the overall effect it would have which allows this album to be creepily psycholigical and atmosperic through its entirety. The guitar is beautiful, yet solemn, the voices added by other people are fitting. I recommend this album highly to anyone who likes music whther you get black metal or not.

Satan coldly and gruesomly sews together Pink Floyd and Burzum.,

Stark, entrancing, and deeper than the depths of any chasm. I got this album yesterday, and at first my friend and I weren't sure if it stood up against LEVIATHAN. However, just like Leviathan you gotta listen to the WHOLE album to appreciate the overall atmosphere and psychadelia of this beast. Wrest is a twisted evil genius and this is the most crystal clear glimpse into that fact with "CLEAN SPOKEN" thats right clean spoken phrases. Every moment is so methodical so premeditated for the most perfect sense of bleak empty vastness that is as fun as it is surprising at every unexpected turn. Only a black metal "purist" fool would deny that this is some of the blackest of the black. So go buy this and kill yourself listening to it.

Wrest's best work.,

I wish Wrest would put out more music under his Lurker of Chalice form. This whole cd is a masterpiece of ambient black metal. If you are a fan of black metal and don't require that all your music include blast beats then pick this up, you will be doing yourself a favor.

An amplified depressive Leviathan,

When i listened to Lurker of Chalice the first time I felt that chilly feeling through my spine, that kind you love to feel but that's so rare. That's because LOC is nothing but a genuine masterpiece crafted by a talented genius, Wrest.
Musically speaking, LOC is an amplified depressive Leviathan, being much less black metal than Wrest's main project. The vocals are at the low end of the spectre, which helps to deplete the black metal feeling. However you will find some tremolo picking guitars on two of the faster songs, once the most part of time things develop at mid-tempo. Wrest also performes clear singing on some songs and the outcome is amazing and full of emotion. By the way, that's what LOC is all about: deep emotions. I think Wrest was going through very hard and sad times when wrote these songs given the so depressive mood of each song, you won't find nothing angry, or hateful here, just sadness, regret, melancholy, all in form of musical notes. If you like the depressive side of Leviathan and depressive black metal in general you have to check this out...it's just perfect and soul crushing.

Industrial + Black Metal + Goth = Masterpiece,

This review is from: Lurker of Chalice (Audio CD)
Very little I can add about Wrest's music on this album. it perfectly blends all three of these genres... I hear bits of Tear Garden and Dead Voices on Air, (Especially "Piss Frond") even some ambient textures a la Massive Attack along with pieces of classic Leviathan. I've seen some bad reviews of this album online, but I think they completely miss the eclectic mix of dark genres on this album. If you have a wide musical palette, don't hesitate, immediately buy this album!
Production quality is also some of the best I've heard for a BM band. Though, you can clearly hear he's using a drum machine on this record. Not a big deal for an old rivet-head, but might annoy purists. |
