2.0 out of 5 stars Just smooth jazz female vocals
I bought several of her CD's and she is good to listen to but I keep waiting for her to break out into a Blues or Jazz tempo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great Stuff, July 7, 2002
This review is from: Lush Life (Audio CD)
Diane Krall is great and so is Jacintha. I don't understand why everyone is'nt running around talking about Jacintha. This recording is fantastic. Her wonderful voice draws you right in, the back up musicians are excellent, the songs are well chosen and the recording is pure audiophile heaven. This is my album to chill out on for the time being. I hope Jacintha will play in Singapore very soon.

PS Get it on vinyl if you have a turntable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dry Martini - stirred not shaken, August 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lush Life (Audio CD)
I like a wide variety of music, Megadeth to Union Station and I appreciate fine audio recordings. Jacintha seemed like she maybe out of my scope of my preferred styles, but purchased "The Girl From Bossa Nova" based on reports of good sonics and that I was looking for that style of music for my collection. That album enticed me to buy more Jacintha because her vocals and execution are compelling. Being an audiophile nut I found the audiophile content to be most enjoyable. The arrangements are fresh, cool and interesting.
Mix a dry Martini with two olives(stirred NOT shaken), turn the lights down very low, slide Jacintha into your expensive SACD player, sit back and just listen.
Be careful she gets under your skin; I have 3 of her albums now.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best yet from Jacintha., July 14, 2008
This review is from: Lush Life (Audio CD)
I have all her albums now (apart from the "Hollywood" one) and this is my fave. Nothing unexpected to come in and jar, as sometimes is the case with other relaxing albums. Everything on here is laid back and smooth and irresistibly seductive in a lanquid, mellow way. Her first ever album ("Tribute to Ben") was just a little too slow, but everything she has done since has been a delight and this is the best yet. Sophisticated dinner party music, luxury lounge, or just plain bedtime relaxation to get you in the mood for sleep or smooching with someone special. You can't go wrong if you are partial to this kind of music.
Sultry, sophisticated, seductive, from the beautiful "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (also love the version of this from Diana Krall) to the end track, this album is pure gold from beginning to end. Sublime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Old Standards Sound Fresh, June 23, 2010

I've always liked the music of Billy Strayhorn, particularly Lush Life. Toss in Harlem Nocturne, September Song, Summertime and The Boulevard of Broken Dreams and, given it was payday, I decided to purchase this CD.

I'd never heard of Jacintha Abisheganaden, the 52-year-old Singaporean singer, and I had my reservations about whether she could pull off these 10 American songbook standards. But after listening to the opening lyric on The Avenue of Broken Dreams, I knew I had worried needlessly--her interpretation of the lyrics positively aches.

All of the songs are spot on--on Black Coffee, Jacintha simply sizzles, while her treatment of the Brazilian Manha de Carnaval is, like a beautiful Brazilian woman lost in a sensuous dance, elegance personified. Summertime, The Shadow of Your Smile, When the World Was Young, September Song, Harlem Nocturne and Smile all receive superb vocal treatment. Oh, and she intonates the requisite amount of melancholia on Billy "Sweet Pea" Strayhorn's Lush Life.

The arrangements, too, are a departure from the more traditional piano, bass, drums and brass, with a nod to strings.

There is much to applaud on this CD (my only wish was that several more tunes had been added); therefore, it comes highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated, September 10, 2002

Where's the heart? Where's the soul? Where's the swing?
Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, or even Eva Cassidy are excellent examples of the power of female jazz vocals; Jacintha and Diana Krall are excellent examples of hyped-up marketing with no jazz sensibilities.
By the way, the photo appears to show the XRCD version of this disc; the one actually being sold is the much-inferior standard CD. But even the sound of vinyl can't replace soul....
