Iggy Pop: Origins,
This review is from: Iggy Pop - Lust For Life (Amazon Instant Video)
"Lust For Life" is no mere concert DVD, and nor is it an interview DVD. Lust for Life is an autobiography of Iggy Pop. The DVD is a combination of alternating concert footage and interviews. Iggy recounts his early experience as a drummer, working with the Iguanas and the Prime Movers. He tells the story of his personal experience and development of who Iggy Pop became. Interviews with Ron Asheton (ex-guitarist of the Stooges) give insight into the band's musical development, and the phenomenal power of the three finger power chord, and the influence of drugs on the band in the '60s.Lust for Life isn't only about Iggy and the Stooges, it shows the deep influence Iggy, the godfather of punk, had on rock music in general, and the influence of other bands on them. Iggy describes the influence of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" on his own "No Fun." Asheton describes the influence of Jimi Hendrix. Concert footage of the Sex Pistols show the Stooges' part in the development of punk. Iggy goes on to talk about the back and forth effects he and David Bowie had on one another. Lust for Life has made me even more of a fan of Iggy Pop than I had been previously. The deeper knowledge of where the band and their songs came from makes everything more poignant. The only bad thing I can say about the DVD is that some of the footage's voiceovers are in Dutch. This is a little distracting, but it's not hard to get the jist of what's being said. I'd definitely recommend Lust for Life for fans of Iggy Pop, and fans of any form of punk derivative rock. -Eric Savage, Innocent Words dot com (Issue 34, June 2009)
