Easy to use, inexpensive, and works just fine. Many people don't realize how important it is to plant vegetables when the soil is at the proper temp for that particular type. Use of this thermometer, along with the chart they include of the ideal temp for many different varieties, makes it easy and you'll be surprised at how much better your plants grow if you have only been using the calendar to determine when to plant your garden.

This soil thermometer works well. This is actually the second one I've owned. I bought the first one to take mushroom-hunting. I purchased the second one when I lost the first one after inserting it in the ground, turning my back and then being unable to see the green top for all the undergrowth. It's still out there. The second one won't be placed in service until the top has been painted red.

I call this read it fast because in order to read it you must remove it from the soil and read it quickly before the temperature changes. Otherwise, if you want to read it while it is still in the ground you would have to lie down on the ground and turn your head to read it!

I wanted a plain old fashioned bulb thermometer. The Amazon shipment arrived in a miraculous three days via U.S. Postal. The good sized knob on the end is very handy to grab hold of when wearing gloves. Several reviewers find the scale easy to read. I do not. The scale is quite compact and it requires good light to read it accurately, which isn't always available throughout the day. Even though it only cost $7.40 I want accuracy when measuring soil temps. The Luster Leaf is a couple degrees off. Usually that's not a big deal, but it does make a difference in certain instances. For my specific use I'll replace it with a far more expensive digital thermometer. For 99% of users I would definitely recommend it. It's solid and well made.

This product is totally easy to use. It's sturdy and inexpensive, requires no batteries. It's very useful in the early spring and fall to determine planting times and location.

Product works fine but is hard to read when plants are on lower shelves in greenhouse. Seems to be accurate on readings.

I bought the thermometer along with some other soil testing supplies. It is interesting to check the soil temp and see how it compares to the temp outside. One thing though if you look at the picture you will see that the bottom two inches is covered in metal. The metal section is the only part that can go in the ground. So if you want to know the temp of the soil deeper than two inches you will need to dig out room for the thermometer.

The thermometer works well but I guess I was a little mislead by the title "Rapitest." I thought it would get a quick, accurate reading but instead I found I just needed to leave the thermometer in the ground for awhile and check it after about 5-10 minutes. Just FYI. Also found it best to push the thermometer further into the ground until just the green top was showing.
