5.0 out of 5 stars Works well
I saw many negative reviews so I must report I have had a different experience. I tend to use potting mix or loamy soils so I don't know if that is a factor. However in meter seems to report put water as maximum as I expect. With soils I known to be completely dry is reports as dry. In one section where I have peas it quickly reports as being on the dry side as I would...

A friend who also raises moisture sensitive succulents independently came to the same conclusions.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a piece of junk, April 5, 2005

This has a 1-4 scale. When I brought this home I tested a plant I had not watered in a week, it read 2. I tested the plant next to it that I had watered earlier the same day, it read 2. I stuck it in a glass of water, it read 3.

According to the directions I should have watered all of the above. If followed the directions my plants would all die of over watering in no time.

However in meter seems to report put water as maximum as I expect. With soils I known to be completely dry is reports as dry. In one section where I have peas it quickly reports as being on the dry side as I would expect as they are heavy water users when making pods.
I would certainly test against known conditions to make sure the unit is working but it certainly has made is much easier for me to quickly gage water.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality control.... (former scientist review), March 30, 2007
I bought this product a long time ago and it never seemed accurate. Recently, I bought another one and used it for a variety of plants. In a nutshell, it doesn't seem accurate at all. In fact, if I dip the stem at various depth in pure water, I get a reading that it's about "half dry." My experience with the other meter was similar. I think this is a case of fool me once, shame on you.... fool me twice, shame on you. The one other interviewer of this product seems to have had the same experience. It appears to me at the least there might be poor quality control. I hope someone comes out with a decent meter of this type. If you know of one, I would like to hear about it and I would gladly pay more money for something that actually worked well and was rugged.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality; Inaccurate readings, August 14, 2007
I have purchased two of these meters and they both broke after using them a few times. I am using them on trees with mulch around them and you can barely put any pressure on them before they snap. I would also gladly pay more money for one that was hardy. Also if you press too hard the readings become inaccurate because the wires inside pull out before you notice that they are broke. I would not buy any more of this particular brand. They need to make one that is stronger.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality --stops working after a few weeks, May 29, 2007
The idea is a great one but this isn't the meter to get. I bought one for work and one for home. They both quit after about a month or less. I was being so careful to watch the gauge and to be sure I had the number for the plant type. I almost killed one of the plants at work because the meter said 4 and the plant was completely dry by feel. I checked the measurement in a glass of water to see what it read. I later checked the gauge in a bag of freshly opened potting soil. The potting soil which was completely dry measured at 3.5 so I realized the gauge had "died". I had this same problem at home and realized the gauge was "wrong" and watered the plant; thankfully didn't kill any of my plants thinking this gauge was working. Very disappointing. I do not recommend it.

I bought this item for someone else because before I bought one 2 years ago, I used to kill all my large indoor plants. I always thought they needed water, but now with this moisture meter I have not killed anything. I LOVE IT....

5.0 out of 5 stars Moisture Tester, April 21, 2008
Simple device and friendly to use. From all indications it appears to generate helpful accurate results. Accidentally purchased instead of a pH meter but have no regrets.

Having used other moisture meters before, we don't expect them to last more than a year. So we ordered five of these for our home and community gardens. Even though my husband treated the first one very carefully, it died after one use. The seller (antonline) made it not worth our while to return all five. Moisture meters are not sturdy products, but this one is simply defective.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality, not accurate, July 26, 2007
I bought this product thinking the idea was great. It doesn't work. I tested it in water and in dry soil and it didn't do well in telling me those readings when I knew what it should be. By the time I had this a month it was not reading at all for anything. I wasted some money on it. A heavier model is needed that has some reliability. I like the idea of being able to test for moisture for a plant.
