5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea. Great product.
This product is a great idea, and it works very well. Simply place the calculator outside in the early morning, and later that day you can see about how many hours of sun that particular spot has. You no longer have to guess when buying plants for your yard.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for houseplants
This produce does NOT work for houseplants! I placed it under my grow light system to verify its accuracy (my African violets thrive there and they need lots of light). After 24 hours the unit registered "full shade" which just isn't accurate, at least for indoors.

This is a lot easier to use than many of the other garden light meters, because you just plonk it in the soil and it does the readings for you----the other light meters, you have to take 6+ readings and then average them for a light reading, which is time consuming and a hassle. This little buddy is super duper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous gadget!, July 10, 2011

My yard is entirely "natural area," with no lawn and with spots ranging from (barely) full sun to full shade and everything in between. The light conditions at many locations are constantly shifting, and I have found it next to impossible to judge how much light a spot actually receives over the course of a sunny day. I'm getting ready to transplant some perennials and shrubs, and I'm sick of planting things where I think they will do well, only to discover a year or two later that I have misjudged the amount of light! I found the SunCalc here at Amazon while checking out a pricier device that also measures soil moisture and temperature. All I really wanted was a one-day measurement of light level, so this fit the bill perfectly! The SunCalc works exactly as advertised and is very simple to use, with clear and complete directions provided. It has already let me know that a spot I thought was in part shade actually is in full shade and has confirmed that another spot gets part shade (which I thought might get part sun). I don't know yet how long the batteries will last, but that's no big deal. My only "problem" is that I'm not a "morning person," so it was tough getting up early enough to turn the calculator on! I'd love to have a version I could program to turn on at a certain time, but but that's probably asking too much! The SunCalc is a simple and elegant solution to a real problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works as advertised., August 13, 2011
This review is from: Luster Leaf 1875 Rapitest Suncalc Sunlight Calculator (Lawn & Patio)
I bought the Luster Leaf Suncalc to see if I could find other gardening spots in my yard. It works great, as advertised. It's very easy to use and straightforward. My only reservation is that it doesn't tell the actual number of hours of sun a spot gets, just if it's "full sun", "part sun" etc. It would be nice to know what the time range was for each designation. That being said, it seems to work well enough that my plants are happy in their spots and that's the main thing.

I learned about this product from Master Gardeners in my area. This product is great and so far has been quite reliable. It tells you wherever you place it in your yard, whether you have full sun, partial sun, shade etc. so that you can accurately plant your flowers, vegetables, etc. I used it this spring to guide my planting and I plan on doing it again once all the leaves on the trees come out and again in the Fall to get an accurate idea of the lighting in my yard. So far, so good. I highly recommend!

Unless you're extremely well-organized and attentive, it can be difficult to figure out the number of hours of daylight a particular part of your yard or garden receives. This little device is a great help in that regard and will make planting locations much easier to determine this season than in years past.

This is very useful and I think more people should buy this or a product like this. It helped me make informed decisions of where to place my vegetables in my garden so that they can grow to their full potential. Thank you.
