I use this stuff to tie up boxes I put out for recycling. I'm sure one could find something cheaper, but it works and I like the integrated blade for cutting it (though it's a bit dull)

Twine is as expected. Can is great because 1) it's not plastic packaging, 2)twine is easy to spool out and measure, BUT the fixed blade is somewhat dull/unreliable at cutting; a yank intended to cut often just results in additional twine being removed from the container. This may actually be a perk if you have small children and are worried about sharp objects.

I really like this packaging- it makes it easy to take it with me as I toil in the garden or in the garage or handle my craft fairs. It's pretty consistent in size and unrolls well from the box. I agree with another reviewer that the cutting tool is worthless but that's not what I bought it for. Actually I'm kind of glad I don't risk nicking my fingers when I pick it up. Great for wrapping, tagging, and even making pirate ships! (I used it to make bunting and "rigging" for a birthday party mock-up and new product. It turned out really cute!

DESCRIPTION
A strong tough but soft brown twine which is ideal for tying up plants, or any other uses for twine. Comes in a convenient "tin" dispenser can. The "fraying" rustic look may be good for some craft projects or tying up gifts. This is NOT butcher's (or cooking) twine, and should NOT be used for cooking. For cooking use: Norpro Stainless-Steel Holder with Cotton Cooking Twine, 220 feet

COMPARED TO ORIDINARY JUTE TWINE
Ordinary jute is more brittle and less flexible, and therefore not as easy to tie knots with. Luster Leaf is soft and easy to tie.

BIODEGRADABLE
A presumed feature of this twine is that (compared to wire, nylon twine, or plastic cable ties) it is "biodegradable", i.e., by the time your plant is established the twine will rot rather than constricting the growth of the plant. If you want the twine to hold for more than a year, you might consider some stronger and/or non-biodegradable material.

DISPENSER CAN
> True, the built in cutter is not terribly sharp, but it does work, just "saw" the twine back and forth. You can sharpen it in just a minute or two with a metal file or with a rotary stone and your Dremel tool.
> You can attach the can to your belt (or belt loop) with a 6" bungy. SE 6" Ball Bungee Cord Canopy Tarp Tie Down Straps
> The lid of the can is not too tight and can be bumped off. This is easily fixed by slightly mashing the lid (take it off the can first) to make the fit tighter. Alternatively, you can tape the lid on with blue painters tape.

I'm sure this is a great product for it's intended purpose...either tying up boxes or outside use, but I wouldn't recommend buying this for craft use. It smells really really bad, like a bike chain. And airing the twine out doesn't make the smell lessen.
I'm sure I should rate it more than a 2, because it's not claiming to be for crafts and it's probably a 5 for the intended purpose. But I will put it in the lower star category so that people can read it's not all purpose twine.

I bought this item because I liked the rustic look to tie my labels on the apparel I make. I cannot use this for any of my items due to the odor of turpentine or insecticide smell on the twine. I ended up giving it to my husband for his tomato plants!! I really like the twine but the smell was just too strong and would have ruined my clothing items.

I purchased this originally with the intention of using it for cooking twine, and then noticed it was made of rough spun Jute, so I can't really use it for cooking. Well, I could, but, it's a bit rough and thick for the purpose I need.

So, I now have a spool of jute to use for other projects. There's always some useful purpose for any kind of string around here. The description suggests using it in garden projects, and it may just come in handy for that this year. :)

I haven't had any problems with this string being brittle or weak, it seems to hold a good bit of weight and I certainly cannot break it by hand. I find it easier to cut with scissors than trying to use the lid's unsharp flat cutter, however. Not sure that flange on top is really a cutter and not just a spooler to keep the twine from coming out too quickly.

Really, there isnt a lot to be said, but i'll give you the rundown.

The twine comes in a really cool looking can, IMO. The lid was displaced inside the package when i received it, but that is really unimportant.
The twine has a peculiar scent to it (not bad, just somehow odd....can't really explain that better), but is as strong and durable as any other twine. I use it primarily for tying tomatoes, beans, and kiwi plants to stakes. Works just fine. I imagine i will try using it in the kitchen sometime soon, but haven't as of yet.

Oh, and the lid has a dispenser on the top, so you dont have to worry about the thing getting messy and unraveled, which is a nice feature, IMO.
