This is a very simple to use, elegant, incandescent light dimmer.
This product does NOT include a face plate. In order to use this switch you have to purchase a Lutron face plate, the normal screw in face plates do not work. It was irritating because Ace Hardware carries the blister pack switches with face plates; but not the plates alone. Home Depot has a very small selection of these switches and face plates.

The switch installs exactly the same way as any other switch. It fits in a standard size switch box. The connections are screws on the switch body (some dimmer switches use pig tail wires instead of the screws). The switch is set in a farily flimsy piece of metal.
To determine if this switch will work, first look at the lights this will control. If they add up to less than 600 Watts, you are good to go. For example, if the switch you have now turns off 6 lights, and you put 100W bulbs in the sockets, this will work. If you use 150W reflector lights, this will not work.
This switch only works with incandescent lamps - the old style light bulbs. It does NOT work with compact fluorescent lamps.
And, if your lights are turned off and on by one single switch, there are no others that can turn the lights off and on; then this switch will work. Getting into the two and three way (two or more switches turn the lights off) is sadly very complicated with this dimmer. Go to the Lutron website for advice.
The switch itself does feel slightly cheap. The plastic paddle has a fair amount of play and doesn't feel big, heavy and hydraulic when the switch is flipped. The Non-dimming Decora by Leviton switches feel much more solid.
This is an amazingly easy light switch to use. I had hesitated for a long time getting replacement dimmers. I hated the whole slider idea. Hit the paddle switch on the top, the light slowly brightens until it reaches the previous intensity set. Hit the bottom of the paddle and the lights slowly dim until they are off. To brighten or dim the lights, press the top or bottom of the little thin switch on the right side of the paddle. You can hold the top or bottom of the paddle and change the intensity in big steps.
There appears to be almost an infinite amount of dimming levels when you use the thin switch for intensity adjustment. I like that a lot. It is possible to have lamps glow orange, just barely on. It's a very pretty effect for a night light.
The LED's on the left give a general idea of light intensity. The top LED is red to indicate you are burning a lot of electricity. The lower ones are all green to show that you are being green and using less electricity with your lights. When the light is turned off, the preset intensity LED glows a little brighter than the others. The room has to be almost completely dark to see this effect. There is a very slight green and red glow from the LED's in a dark room. Not the best to locate a switch, but still an indicator.
Overall, I like this switch a lot. I wish it came with a face plate, which was an irritation to go chase after. You might want to shop carefully for those face plates, they might be a little less expensive at your local home center. But then again, having the whole thing shipped to you is darn convenient.
January 29, 2012 Update: My apologies, yes you can use any Decora rectangular cover plates with the Lutron line of switches. The two piece Lutron coves just look a heck of a lot nicer with these switches. This dimmer has been in our dining room, used daily, for a year with no problems at all. I happen to really like this switch a lot compared to some other new dimmers from Leviton. This is super simple to use, and intuitve. Some of the newer switches are complicated to dim and require the owner's manual to program. This switch just works.
