Lux timer doesn't time,
By
This review is from: Lux CP2428-59 Mechanical Classic Timer, White (Kitchen)
I have a Lux timer that is nearly 40 years old (made in USA) and has given me good service. So, when I needed another for a second home, I bought what I thought was the same thing. True, the styling is the same, but that is where the similarity ends. The new one, made in China, is flimsy, and no matter what I do, the timing stops at about 30 minutes. I.E., it's a piece of junk -- what a disappointment!

My mom had a Robert Shaw Lux Minute Minder when I was growing up and it was solid and reliable.I bought one of these Lux Minute Minders because I find digital timers annoying (they never seem to be as easy to set as a Minute Minder). I thought this timer would be great like my mom's, but it isn't. Half the time it stops before it reaches zero, and never rings. A timer this unreliable is useless. It also feels cheap and flimsy compared to my mom's. I do like the long ring, but this and its vintage appearance don't offset its erratic performance. I'm going to try to get a real vintage Robert Shaw Lux Minute Minder on eBay, and toss this one in the trash.

This piece of trash is an insult to the name Lux! Certainly, this is not the same Lux of old, the Lux that manufactured reliable clocks and timers for many, many years. I had a Lux timer similar to this one for too many years to count, made of superior materials, and it worked superbly. This timer, which I will no longer refer to as a Lux, is an obscene horror that stopped working after a few uses. Innumerable times my old Lux was dropped, banged, and caught in an open gas flame and it still performed perfectly. This cheaply made forgery would never withstand the kind of punishment involved in normal kitchen use. Of course, it stopped working after the time limit for returning it and I was stuck with the flimsy third-rate plastic junk and out a substantial investment of my hard earned money. I don't like giving my cash to anonymous foreign corporations that produce products under the title of trusted American brands of bygone days and turn out to be nothing more than stomach turning copies that do not function anything like the original of some 50 years ago. Basically, I feel I was robbed and held up under false pretences. If my original Lux hadn't finally been broken by a grandchild in a fit of temper, it would still be working as it did when I received it as a wedding present in 1948. It was a solid piece of "made in USA" engineering, design, and manufacture. My loss of that beloved cooking partner is only intensified by the purchase of such a fraudulent, overpriced pretender to the once honored name of Lux.

I think my mother had a timer just like this. It worked for her for years, so I picked one up, hoping to get the same results. This is a nice timer. Pretty sure it's not as accurate as newer, digital timers, but it never needs batteries and will give you a good idea of how long something has been cooking (or whatever else you want to use it for), if you don't need something timed to the specific second.

This timer is cheaply made and I'm sending it back after a day. It's very flimsy and mine didn't even work out of the packaging. The timer stops at -2 minutes instead of at 0 and the bell doesn't even go of. If this was priced at $2 I might understand, but not at this price. Save yourself the trouble and buy a different product.

When I cooked with this timer, I discovered the food was not done. Then I checked the accuracy of the timer and found it is off by several minutes. I wouldn't recommend this timer to anyone.

I was really surprised by the cheap build. The picture shows dark numbers and logo and I assumed they were recessed. Mine has white printed numbers and logo which look really tacky. They aren't recessed and will likely rub off with any use. The thing that actually made my jaw drop, though, is that the back is open. If you turn the timer around, you see the metal timing mechanism held in place with a single screw into black plastic. I'm disappointed that the build is so cheap. Two stars because the faux copper finish is convincing.

Somehow Amazon has brought up a "Toy Review" form but I am evaluating this based on the needs for a timer for Pomodoro Technique activities. The product (with slight undocumented model number changes) has changed over the years. In the interest of cost control (I assume) features like stopping the ticking after the ring were abandoned which lowers the costs, is probably no an issue in many situations but makes the product less desirable than the older model which did stop on ring. There is also a slight misalignment of when it rings (about 1 minute visually). It works. Seems to work repeatedly but it does not "feel" like the product of old which is, IMO, higher quality. Finally, this particular version is a ring as opposed to a ding which other versions do. The packaging says "Long Ring" but that is not mentioned in the information on Amazon.

This review is from: Lux CP2428-86 Mechanical Classic Timer, Bronze (Kitchen)
Upon opening the package, I could tell that this wasn't going to be a heavy duty timer. The color (bronze) is very bright and the material is a thin metal. My first impressions were not good. When trying the timer for the first time, I set it for 5 minutes. It didn't go off until 2 minutes PAST the mark (or at 58 minutes) and then continued ticking, but eventaully stopped. I then dug the packaging from the garbage. The package only has one instruction, 'for short time periods, turn past 30 and then back to desired time.' So, I followed the instruction and it worked better. It did go off at the proper time, but still continued to tick for a minute or so afterward. All-in-all, I'm not that impressed but for the little money I spent, I can't expect miracles. |
