Best thermostat with excellent remote,
By Serious Sirius User (Newington, CT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased a LUX TX9000RF programmable thermostat as I wanted to be able to remotely control my AC and Heat from my bedroom for those times when I want to make minor temperature changes. The installation was easy, instructions clear, and this item works PERFECTLY. I threw out my old Honeywell setback thermostat as the Lux has several good default programs for saving energy. I highly recommend this unit for anyone who wants better control of AC or heat at odd times. One button on the remote resets the original settings or you can HOLD a certain temp for any amount of time. A++ quality. Well done, Lux.

This was one of the best purchases I have made. I was so tired of waking up in the middle of the night and having to walk downstairs to adjust the temperatute. This thermostat and remote control work exactly as advertised. The only slight difference I notice is that the temperature reading for the house does not seem to be quite as sensitive as my old thermostat, so sometimes you have to set it a little cooler than you would think to get it to click on. But a small price to pay for the convenience of not walking downstairs in the middle of the night. You will not be disappointed.

Great energy savings,

This is a great unit--easy installation (about 30 minutes for a non-HVAC expert) and good directions. The remote has a great range--I operate it across a 3,000+ SF home with no problems. Multiple channels are available, so if you're like me, you can install multiple remotes to control multiple thermostats. What heavily impresses me with this unit is how it conserves energy in a way that cuts my utility bill. When the air conditioning is activated (perhaps for the furnance, too--I don't know because it's September here in San Diego and I can wait to find out), the unit will spool up the compressor to cool the air and eventually turn off the compressor while still blowing. In other words, you get the benefit of additional cool air while only paying for the fan and not the more energy-hungry air conditioner. I heard of this method of energy savings before but was highly skeptical on the actual benefits it would deliver. Suffice it to say that I'm now a believer.

Consumer Reports recommended the Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote as a great value. We concur. Easy installation instructions provided and a video is also from Lux website. Both my wife & I dreaded leaving our warm bed to turn up the thermostat on those cold winter mornings. This programmable thermostat solves this problem on a regular basis (pre-programmed times & temperature settings). On those mornings when we wake before the std. time, our remote control allows us to set the desired temperature without leaving the warmth of our bed. I wish that this product was available in Minnesota when I was a kid in the 1960's! Happy & warm in North Carolina...........

Highly Functional_And User Friendly,
This review is from: Lux TX9000RF Programmable Thermostat with Remote (Tools & Home Improvement)
This thermostat offers some pretty nice features. If you live in an environment that is prone to temperature and humidity extremes, as we do here in Arizona, then having a remote control is very handy for tweaking the thermostat's settings by a degree or two without having to drop your studies or get out of bed to do it. Since the remote is a radio frequency (RF) control, adjustments can be made from any room in the house. Walls do not interfere with signals that this remote control unit sends to the thermostat. When you adjust the thermostat using the remote control the unit automatically reverts to settings you have programmed as soon as the desired temperature has been attained. The remote also has a cancel button that allows you to revert to your programmed settings at any time. This unit can save you quite a bit of money if it is installed in an appropriate place and programmed properly. The ideal place to locate a thermostat is 5 feet above the floor on a wall that is in an open area such as a living or dining room, which is not exposed to drafts. The thermostat needs to sense the ambient temperature of the room. If it is placed in a drafty location, the thermostat will not be able to properly control the temperature, because it will send false readings to your air handling unit. The problem I was experiencing prior to installing this thermostat stemmed from the fact that the thermostat was mounted in a hallway, immediately beneath the return air duct for the a/c unit. Subsequently, the thermostat would sense a perpetual flow of heat in the air streaming past it and would send false signals to the A/C unit telling it operate much more than it needed to. On a 110+ degree day the A/C unit would run almost perpetually. Thus, coolant in the unit was not able to rest and adequately recover from the heat it was absorbing during protracted cycles. The solution was 15 feet of 4-conductor #20 AWG (Solid Copper) cable from a hardware store, which I butt spliced to the cable that was originally installed in the wall. This allowed me to locate the Lux thermostat on a living room wall about 8 feet from the location of the old thermostat. This has cut the time my air conditioner runs by about 20 percent, and the nice thing about this thermostat is that it monitors the time that the air handling unit runs, by providing read-outs for hours and minutes utilized on a daily basis -- i.e. yesterday, today, and the total for the month. Lux has great customer service, so if you need help installing this thermostat you may well be able to do it yourself. Even if you need to pay an electrician for an hour, 20 percent off of a few $400+ electricity bills adds up pretty fast.

Easy to use...Easy to like...,

The Lux thermostat works well and is easy to install. The faceplate can be detached so you can sit in your favorite chair to program it rather than standing by the wall. Super easy programming with straightforward dial and buttons. The remote control adds a lot of convenience and has an addressing switch if you have more than one thermostat to control.

I was able to replace my old thermostat with this one in about 30 mins. It works well. The only issue I have is when using remote to change the temp, the program will override it when the next programmed time runs.

I had some reservations about buying this product because of the one reviewer that said the temperature reading wasn't accurate. When I got it, I tested it and found it to be accurate. I also discovered (by reading the manual) that the temperature can be recalibrated by the user and that it is quite easy to do. For those that read that review and have the same concern, don't worry about it - read the manual. The remote is great! I often wake up during AC season and decide I want the room a degree colder. Not having to get up to change the temperature is really nice. I imagine it will be just as nice in the winter time when I want to start the heat earlier than normal and won't have to get out of bed to do so. The form factor is a little "boxy", but we have ours installed in the bedroom somewhat out of sight. The many features and the super-useful remote earn it 5 stars despite the less-than-perfectly-beautiful design. 8 WEEKS LATER: The remote control feature has really grown on me - I can't imagine having a thermostat without a remote. It is a lot like keyless entry on a car - once you have it, you can never go back to not having it!

I just had central air installed in my house and bought this thermostat so I don't have to climb the stairs every time I want to turn my A/C on. Works great. As a matter of fact I ordered another remote so I can keep one in my bedroom. a side note,I just received a second remote from lux and found out the hard way that this thermostat will not work with 2 remotes. I wanted to keep 1 remote upstairs and 1 downstairs. when you program the second remote it will over ride the first remote.

Poor customer support and reliability,

In two years of ownership have had to replace twice, and now has failed for a third time.I called there technical support this AM for assistance and all I got was a twilight zone voice mail that told me that they were very busy (is it any wonder?) and assured me that I would receive a call back within 24 hours. I suppose the plan is that you are to sit besides your phone for 24 hours just in the event that they do call you. Well as it turns out, it is now Friday evening at 12 midnight and still no call and I suppose that I will not be receiving one on Saturday or Sunday, so perhaps I will hit the jackpot on Monday. Of course now it is winter time and our heating system is totally down, as when the thermostat fails, it refuses to respond to commands to turn up (or even on) the heat. I did find that if I set the thermostat "set" point very low and tell it to cool, that all works ok. So now I will be re-installing our Honeywell thermostat so that we will have heat for the rest of the weekend. Lucky for me, I do not have to call the heating service people out for likely a 300 dollar weekend bill to install the Honeywell, as I am handy enough that I can do myself. The first 2 units that I installed also failed, the first one in the first 3 weeks. The second one has now lasted less than a year. Again lucky that I don't have to call out the appliance repairman for the labor of replacing them. Meanwhile it eats batteries as though the batteries themselves are fueling our furnace and not natural gas. As the unit uses 6 batteries be prepared for this. I guess it would have never occurred to these dopes to power the thermostat itself off household current that is stepped down. I do not need there so called automatic set back features (most of these things are useless in the real world anyway) so I need not worry about saving a "program" during a power outage. The many many hours that I have spent fooling with this thing (sometimes it works other times it does not so I am often called to the thermostat to find what's up and why it did not respond to my remote commands) I could likely have made hundreds of trips to the thermostat to manually set the temperatures that is desired. So time and convenience is a total net loss when owning this device. I suppose the bright side is that we live in California where night time temperatures fall to 40 degrees and not not North Dakota where they fall to below zero. I generally only write reviews on poor performing companies and products. I believe that the excellent performing companies who develop and market quality products do not need my help, but firmly believe that poor performing ones should be exposed for what they are. In the long run it benefits them because if they are to remain in business, they will be forced to improve, and it benefits consumers as it notifies them that in spite of what Consumer Reports may say on their ratings, Consumer Reports is not measuring reliability of the products or the support provided by the companies (exceptions noted with autos, and a few consumer items,,,,but often far after the fact of a favorable review). 24 hour assurance of call backs is not quality customer support and is even worse considering that they do not even live up to this promise. Shame on them for having such a customer support policy and failing even to adhere to that. |
