More of the same, better in some ways, worse in others,
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Luxor: Amun Rising (PC Games) (Video Game)
Luxor: Amun Rising is basically a retread of the first game with slicker stage graphics, some new twists, a new "storyline," and a new power-up.
What's different: 1. Three difficulty levels instead of the one level with escalating difficulty in the first game. 1. One new powerup, the Scorpion. When you catch this powerup, a scorpion shoots out of the pyramid and destroys the first 10 balls it runs into along the track (or however many are left in a chain if less than 10). If there are two tracks in a stage, it seems to attack the chain that's closest to its respective pyramid. This is an immensely helpful powerup. 2. Several stages feature obstacles on the track that act as dead zones; balls shot at them will simply pass through and hit whatevers above them. These can be frustrating if you aim or time a shot poorly. 3. Most of the stages feature slightly better graphics and more imaginative designs than in the first game, as well as some amusing names and decorations. The first stage, for instance, is called "Die Khufu Die" (obviously in reference to the incredibly frustrating stage 5-4, "Khufu's Revenge," in the first game) and features a picture of Khufu with spears sticking out of him. Pros: 1. It's as insanely addictive as the first game. 2. The Scorpion powerup 3. Graphics are as good as the first, if not a little better. Cons: 1. The storyline is just as superfluous to this game as it was to the first one. 2. It could've used more powerups, or even some penalty actions, to really spice up gameplay. 3. For a sequel, it's really not that difficult. The first game , in the later stages, was VERY difficult and was a genuine test to the player. Amun Rising presents very little genuine challenge, even on the expert level. This is my biggest complaint. All in all, if you enjoyed Luxor then you should enjoy Amun Rising, but don't expect a huge leap between the two games.

A ZUMA-CLONE WITH AN INTERESTING PHARAOHNIC THEME,
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Luxor: Amun Rising (PC Games) (Video Game)
After ZUMA's success, a number of clones appeared - but the LUXOR series is the one that actually improved on some aspects of the concept.
A series of colored balls (with the number of different colors increasing every few levels) gets pushed and you have to match them in sets of three or more in order to remove them - and prevent them from reaching the end zone. Instead of having the "shooter" in the center, it is located at the bottom and it slides left and right. This makes for some quite difficult shots (especially when obstructed by the advancing row of balls) and raises the difficulty of the game. On the other hand, the power-ups are more powerful, at the end of every round a number of coins and gems drop and "catching" them add lives to your paddle. It seems pretty straight-forward yet it can become highly...addictive! Compared to the first installment of the series, LUXOR-AMUN RISING seems somewhat easier; yet, it will fulfill the funs craving for more pharaohnic fun! This is an example of what has come to be known as Casual Gaming: small, resource-light games that are fun for the whole family. It would be a good idea to download the 60-min trial version from a casual games site, such as REFLEXIVE (you can Google it), and decide for yourself whether this is indeed your cup of tea. Also, please note that, there are cheaper versions - even here at AMAZON. It wouldn't hurt to check them out. RECOMMENDED!
