One Hallowe'en, a group of online roleplayers summon a demon, The Prince of Nightmares. Seth, who's in charge of the game, says it's "just for fun". But disturbing things start to happen in real life: red marks appear on the foreheads of the gamers, and they're all having nightmares about a dark forest.
Secrets come out, friendships are broken, and the boundaries between the real, the virtual and the imaginary become increasingly fractured as the Prince becomes more powerful. Kay, a student at Oxford, is the only person who realises what Seth is doing - and it's up to her to stop him.
****EXCERPT****
In bed, Seth fixed his eyes on the ceiling, staring up through the dark. Sleep tugged at him, eddies dragging his thoughts around and around, fracturing them into a sinking swirl. Lines of computer code. Long sleepless nights. A list of names, waiting for payback. And before all that, a child, lost in a forest ...
****REVIEWS****
"This is one of those books I started reading late in the afternoon and then couldn't put down. I stayed up WAAAY too late reading it, because it's the sort of story where you want to read one more chapter and one more after that because you care about the characters, and you're afraid something terribile will happen to them."

"The suspense is magnetic and constant. ... It's definitely a page-turner."

"I'm not a gamer but I was fascinated by the dual worlds of this novel. I enjoyed the fast paced suspense of the 'real world' segments of the book but was also interested in how the online gaming part of it worked. I like a supernatural side to my novels and the way the nightmares were enmeshed in the game and the character's real lives was skillfully done."
Ali Luke loves writing (and reading!) fast-paced fiction with strong characters and a touch of the supernatural. She has a degree in English from Cambridge University and an MA in Creative & Life Writing from Goldsmiths College, University of London.
Obviously written by a pro, this is a fast read that offers a surprisingly (for its length) complex and intricate plot. Horror and its ilk isn't my genre of choice, but I love the premise of a role-playing game taking over its players' lives in a very real and disturbing way. Luke brilliantly segues between real life and gameplay, and interweaves a host of characters and a ton of POVs (something I generally dislike) in a way that allows them all to become insightful and interesting people.
I agree with Joanna... this is a fun and fast paced read. The characters are believable and complex. The best role-playing minded fantasy fiction I've read so far. For anyone who plays or has played D&D type games, live-action or otherwise... especially you coplay artists, will enjoy this thrill ride. I did... and, I plan on reading it again real soon. I know in my haste to get through it I missed something cool.
This is Ali Luke's debut novel and I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy. Am I a friend of Ali's? Yes. Is this a bogus review? I hope not. I read the book and truly enjoyed it. I was a gamer back in the 60's and again in the 90's when my son got into it. This book is written by a gamer but should appeal to everyone who likes a contemporary thriller with a paranormal element of evil and suspense... and, there is teenage angst, marital problems, issues with loneliness, feeling like an outsider, and of course... a hint of romance. I don't see how this book would not appeal to any readers of fantasy, mystery, paranormal... or even abnormal.
I recommend this book highly in all good consciousness and honesty.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this tells the story of a small group of online gamers who summon a demon in the game world, only to discover that the "pretend" demon seems to have real-world power. The story switches point of view between seven different players, slowly revealing their intertwined lives. It's a technique that could easily confuse the reader, but the characters are so well-drawn, with such distinct voices and desires and needs, that the point of view shifts never pulled me out of the story--except that I always wanted more from whichever character was narrating at the moment. It reminds me of Conor Kostick's Epic, with the same mysterious behavior of the game world, only this game is played entirely in text--no graphics.
The story is a mix of dark--it does deal with demon summoning--and light. It's more disturbing in places than EPIC, but has the sort of satisfying, good-guy-wins ending that I (personally) love without wrapping things up too neatly. There's definitely room to continue the story, and I will definitely purchase the next.
And that's saying a lot, because I have been disappointed far too many times by self-published books. This one isn't deep, but it's a quick-paced, engaging read that leaves you wanting more.
