I caught a live show of Ellery last night in Ohio. A friend had seen them a couple times and told me I'd like them. He was right.
I didn't know what to expect, but as soon as Tasha opened her mouth and this exotic yet calming voice came out, I was hooked. When you couple that with Justin's voice, it is just awesome. Granted, given the speaker system, I couldn't make out all of the words, but after buying this CD at the show and reading the lyrics, I realized how gifted they are as songwriters. I even got a chance to meet them and have them sign my CD. They were very gracious and really appreciated the support. I'm definitely looking forward to future albums by Ellery.

I almost can't gather the adjectives to describe the album. The vocals are beautiful, the piano powerful, the lyrics deep and insightful. There is no song on this album i dislike, and several that compete for my favorite.
If you like cheery music, this won't be the album for you, but it's not depressing or morbid. Just somber and introspective, beautifully written and beautifully sung. Simply beautiful. I'm tremendously impatient for Ellery to come out with a new album, i'll buy it without listening to a single phrase or song. I'm not sure how they could do a song i wouldn't love, wouldn't grab my various friends and force them to listen to it regardless of what other pressing obligations they have.

These folks truly are a wonder in musical talent. I have seen them twice in my small town of Wooster Ohio, and they are very cool people. This is a fabulous album, well mastered, and it captures the feel of their live sets without being dirty. This is an addition to your library that you'll always come back to.

Fresh music in a world of stale sound.,

I was lucky enough to see the Ellery team (a husband and wife duo) live last night in Los Angeles, for their very first foray into the West Coast scene. I discovered the duo on Pandora Internet Radio, and I found their sound intriguing. I'm also native Ohioan, so I was curious about them from a geographical perspective, too, since they hail from Cincinnati.
Put simply, these two are breathtaking. Justin, a lanky, unassuming gentleman, positively overwhelms with his skill and passion on the acoustic guitar and backup vocals. And Tasha, with her ethereal voice, her raw emotion, and her fluttering fingers on the keyboard, is one of the best female vocalists I have discovered in a long time, conjuring up images of an American Dolores O'Riordan crossed with the ultimate singer/songwriter/instrumentalist muse, Tori Amos. In short, you'll never believe this much talent, depth, and heart hails from Ohio. But you've got to listen, because there's no doubting once you have.

Great music, fantastic lyrics, and a vocal that's out of this world. This cd is completely worth anyone's time to listen to, and I assure you, you'll be hooked after one listen! An amazing, amazing cd! Incredible! I think Ellery is a band to watch....

Ellery was a great discovery. Nothing too heavy, but not too light either, you get heartfelt songs here that will give you a pleasant listening experience. I love how well the songs are put together- nothing feels rushed on this album. It is actually a very strong album.
There are weak spots on this album though. A few of the songs lack the strength of many others on this album. Some songs don't add up to the same power. Tasha's voice in one or two songs is just too soft for the background music, at times her voice is not as clear as I would like. Yet there is not one song on here to hate, but some give a 'meh' feeling. 1) Anna- A- What led me to listen more to this album. This is written and sung with such great strength. 2) Be Like This- A- Very catchy and well- sung. 3) Song For Lovers- A- - Very lovely, slow song. 4) Arizona- B- In the chorus her voice is way too soft to give this song much strength. 5) Long Coat On- C- Probably the most boring song on here. I skip it always. I just find nothing interesting about this song. 6) The Simple Things- A- The album starts to pick up from here again. The piano and Tasha are beautiful here. 7) Know Better Know- B+- Very delicate and moving song. 8) Inside My Head- A- One of the strongest songs on here and one of the most memorable. 9) Some Lovely Story- C- The song sounds good but there is nothing special to remember from it. 10) You'll Get Through It- B+- Picks up again into a very lovely and well-written song. 11) It's Alright- B- I hardly listen to this song, for it is a bit boring. I cannot deny though it is sung beautifully and ends the album on a positive note. Overall the holes this album may have does not hurt the album too much, mostly thanks to Tasha's very lovely vocals. I think they will grow into stronger albums, and I am eager to hear more from them. 4/5 |
