Product Description

To achieve the highest degree of safety and accuracy, Lyman recommends that all bottleneck rifle cases be inspected after resizing to ensure that the proper headspace dimension is maintained. The best way to check this critical dimension is with a Lyman case length/headspace gauge. The reloader simply inserts the case into the gauge to insure that it does not exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum allowable headspace. In addition, the gauge will identify a case which exceeds the maximum allowable case length . Caution: Any case found with excessive headspace should be destroyed immediately.

I bought this after reading of some issues re-loaders had experienced with loads failing to load or eject. After I got it I Checked all of my loaded rounds and found 4 that did not meet the tolerances. I unloaded them, re sized them and they were OK then. After that I check 100% of the brass after I complete prepping it to assure good fit in the chamber and good ejection. Great tool and gives me great confidence in all of my reloads now. Must have for anyone even thinking of re-loading.

In spite of the single negative review, I can tell you that this is a precise device that will provide an accurate indication of your case headspace and length. I own several of these and have used them without issue and can attest that they are the equal of any other maker's product.. If the single negative reviewer has the difficulty described, he should have contacted Lyman before posting his negative comments.. They will gladly examine his gauge and either repair or replace it as needed if informed of the stated problem. You can buy this product with confidence knowing that Lyman will back it up in the unlikely event that you have any problems.

I bought this to check my .223 reloads for maximum SAMMI specifications and found it will not accept cases that are within spec. I measured the inside diameter of the end of this gauge with a dial caliper and found that it is under the spec for the case rim diameter. So, you can have a case that is at the maximum rim size and meets spec but will not fit into the gauge. Please note that I inspected these cases and the cases do not have any damage to the rims - no dings or dents preventing the case rim from entering the Lyman gauge. The gauge is merely too small to accept a case that is at the upper limit of the spec.

I have verified this by purchasing an LE Wilson .223 case gauge and the Wilson gauge will accept the cases that do not fit into the Lyman gauge. These rounds that do not fit into the Lyman gauge also chamber and fire fine in my rifle. I realize it is not Optics Planet or Amazon at fault here, but Lyman. After researching this further, I have found that this is a known issue with the Lyman gauge.

Do yourself a favor and pass on this one - get the LE Wilson case gauge, it is accurate and it works properly.

If you reload any autoloader rifle this, or something similar is mandatory to make sure head-spaceing is correct. This Lyman tool is very simple to use.

I got this for 223 reloading checks. Before I had this I was using a Wilson Guage when I would reload with my brother and never had a problem. Well after ordering this, I processed 500 LC Nato 2014 1X fired, Wet tumbled, decapped, FL sized, trimmed, chamfer, decrimped , SS wet tumbled.. the whole nine yards. Brass was sexy as heck, consistent and perfect.

Then I started to gauge every one using this Lyman gauge and NONE, I repeat NONE, would fit in the gauge fully. All would protrude .5mm~.8mm or so where the rim of the brass case meets the opening of the die. These rounds all chamber and shoot great in my gun DDM4V5LW.

The only pro I can think of is, although expensive, this does work well as a paper weight.

I recommend that everyone that reloads should have one for every different cal. reloaded. I use them every time I reload.

This items worked perfect for me to show me that my cartridges meet SAMMI specs. In fact, 2 of my cartridges were slightly out of spec so I am glad that I purchased this item to make certain I was in spec.

What I like about the Lyman case gauge is the Go/no go Ridge so you know if you are
within spec of the case.
