Book Description

A well-written textbook that is clear and concise. The organization is exceptional; each chapter is color-coded for ease in locating or browsing through information, and colored shadings in the text emphasize important points. Students and patients interested in this topic will find exceptional value in reading this book. The quality and readability are excellent. - Physical Therapy

This comprehensive textbook discusses current approaches to managing primary and secondary lymphedema and related conditions, such as chronic venous insufficiency, edema, and rheumatoid arthritis. It provides thorough coverage of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the lymphatic system, and explains everything you need to know about manual lymph drainage (Vodder technique), complete decongestive therapy, and other treatment modalities. The authors also provide practical tips on patient self-care, bandaging techniques, and exercises, and give valuable recommendations for administrative and business issues.

Highlights of this second edition:

  • New sections on axillary web syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, and Parkes Weber syndrome
  • Expanded coverage of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, lipedema, and important considerations for treatments
  • Up-to-date information on the care of wounds and skin lesions

Lymphedema Management is an indispensable reference for physicians, therapists, nurses, and students who wish to gain full understanding of this complex topic and maximize treatment success. Lymphedema patients will also greatly benefit from its wealth of hands-on information and helpful illustrations.

From the Author

The focus of this text is on the insufficiencies of the lymphatic system and discusses lymphedema as well as related conditions and currently available intervention techniques. Chapters cover the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the lymphatic system, which should give the readers a clear understanding of how the lymphatic system works and why certain treatment approaches may be more effective than others in case of an insufficient lymphatic system. Additional chapters on diagnosis, evaluation, therapeutic interventions, and administrative issues, as well as an appendix covering patient education and sample forms for lymphedema treatment centers, are intended to make this text a comprehensive resource. Illustrations and tables are included to clarify the anatomic and functional basis of the lymphatic system and treatment interventions. To help the nonmedical reader, I have done my best to use simple terms in the figure legends when feasible. Most of these terms are also listed in the glossary at the end of this textbook. I hope that the first edition of the textbook for Comprehensive Lymphedema Management will prove to be a valuable tool for physicians, therapists, students, and patients. All royalties and proceeds generated by sales of this textbook are donated to charitable organizations and research projects. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Thank you! May 13, 2005
Format:Hardcover
This book is terrific! I have primary lymphedema and have lived with this for 28 years. I would love to put this book into the hands of the many doc's that shook their head and told me that lymphedema is something I would just have to "Learn to live with". I spent many hours and years researching this condition and want to express my sincere thanks to ACOLS and the many other professionals that help people with lymphedma. This text book is easy to read and written in terms that are easy to understand. I give it 5 stars.

useful book March 19, 2010
By S. Holm
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a comprehensive overview of lymphedema and related diseases. It is very easy to read and comprehend even for lay people. The book explains the causes of the diseases and provides very explicit guidelines for how to manage the given disease. For instance, it has a section with pictures explaining how to perform the special lymph massage that drains the lymphatic veins of their fluid. Another useful feature of this book is that it explains the difference between conditions that are very often confused with lymphedema, even by medical doctors, such as lipedema. It also covers venous disease of the blood flow which is a common complication of for instance lipedema. I would especially recommend this book to individuals who suffer from lymphedema or related conditions in order for them to learn more about exactly what is happening in their body and what the best treatment would be.
