Biography

Beyond the tragedy, the history, the raging guitars and the killer songs, ultimately, Lynyrd Skynyrd is about an indomitable will. About survival of spirit; unbowed, uniquely American, stubbornly resolute.
With their first set of new studio material since 2003’s Vicious Cycle, legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd returns with God & Guns, due out September 29 on Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records.… Read more in Amazon's Lynyrd Skynyrd Store

Editorial Reviews

Friday Music welcomes their old friends Lynyrd Skynyrd with their own Atlantic Records Remaster Series as they kick things off with their smokin' Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 CD.

First time on CD in many years, their first studio effort since the fateful Street Survivors LP, this Tom Dowd produced gem includes the chart topping Smokestack Lightning and the Top 10 Keeping The Faith.

Includes all the original photos and original art elements. Impeccably remastered from the original Atlantic Records vault tapes by Joe Reagoso (Doobie Brothers, Johnny Winter, David Lee Roth, Yes)

Next up...The Last Rebel

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Comeback, March 9, 2005

Gregory Masciola (Carol Stream, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 (Audio CD)
This is the first album the band has released since the crash (as Lynyrd Skynyrd). We have on this album original guitarists Garry Rossington, Ed King, and Leon Wilkenson as well as keyboardist Billy Powell and drummer Artimus Pyle from the original Skynyrd, joined by Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant on lead vocals and Randall Hall filling in for Allen Collins. When you first listen to this album, if you're expecting Street Survivors or Second Helping, you may be slightly disappointed. But I think you can learn to like this album. It has some really good songs, along with a few average and a few not-so-good songs.

The hilights of this CD are: "Smokestack Lightning", "Pure & Simple", "Good Thing", "Money Man", & "Backstreet Crawler".

The rest are decent too. The only songs that I don't care for are "It's A Killer" and "I've Seen Enough".

Again, if you're expecting the original Skynyrd, you may be disappointed, but if you just sit back and listen to the CD, you will probably enjoy it. The musicians are still just as good on their instruments as they were before the plane crash, and Johnny does some great singing for us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good album, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 (Audio CD)
This is a good collection of rock songs, and Johnnie Van Zant has a good hard rock voice. The songs are primarily Country-hard rock with some gospel influences. This was my first Lynyrd Skynyrd album and I can say it's a nice album, it has a positive attitude lyrically and this version of the band does know how to rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still rockin'!, October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 (Audio CD)
Having seen the band three days before the 1977 crash, I wasn't sure if I wanted to hear any "new" music from the band without Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie; but I shouldn't have been concerned. This CD rocks with the best of them. Although the lyrics don't seem as genuinely down-home and authentic as ones from earlier years, the music still holds up. From rockers to ballads the band shines. Skynyrd can hold their own with the best of them. If you like the band, you'll enjoy this album. "Keeping The Faith," "Backstreet Crawler," and "End Of The Road" are my favorite cuts.
