Disappointing,
By Ron Hart "Ron" (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lyophilization: Introduction and Basic Principles (Hardcover)
The book is comprehensive and somewhat useful as an introduction into the field. However, it has several flaws that make it fairly disappointing. The text is neither concise nor precise and some information is included that is of questionable value. (60 pages of experimental data in tabular form of thermal properties during cooling and warming of specific solutions are a waste of paper)
Some sections are sloppy. For example on page 64, describing the phase diagram of water, you will find an incomplete sentence, a description that doesn't match the figure (where is the dotted line A-E?), and a very poorly drawn phase diagram (water doesn't really freeze at -15 C at 100 kPa) The author frequently uses non-SI units. A book in this price range should be properly edited and proof-read, in my opinion. This isn't, so I can't recommend it.

More than introduction. Very useful,
By Jorge Sassone "Jorge" (São Paulo, SP, Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lyophilization: Introduction and Basic Principles (Hardcover)
I have found this book of much aid in my work as a scientist, in fact, some doubts I had were totally dissipated from the clear explanation and practical examples showed here. It is truth that there are some flaws, but it is apparent that they come from Editor, for example Figures showing diagrms etc.
Of great help is the fact that the author gives us access to his abundant collection of data wherefrom one can learn how to handle them. I would wish all the authors make like Dr. Jennings in that sense, for the readers will gain a better comprehension of the phenomena whereby they can obtain the necessary process understanding more easily. Concerning arrangement of the Chapters, the author used the logic, thus the book was built in such a way that the understanding of one chapter provides the basis for the understanding of the following one. For all the reasons states, I congratulate Dr. Thomas.A.Jennings and recommend his book.

This is THE book on lyophilization (freeze-drying). The exemplary index makes this essential for manufacturers, researchers, academicians, and pharmaceutical companies.
