About the Author

Leslie M. Carmichael has been inside the Great Pyramid in Egypt, has watched the world turn purple as the moon covered the sun during a total solar eclipse, and has been an honored guest at a Canadian-Scottish-Chinese wedding. She has swum in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, picked amethysts out of the ground near Thunder Bay, and watched a space shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base. She has an impressive collection of costumes, which were made for plays, entering science fiction and fantasy costume contests, and pretending to live in the Middle Ages as a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism. She once cooked a Medieval dinner for 200 people, and has worn a corset, a suit of armor and a Klingon outfit (but not all at the same time). She has even made costumes for some of the plays she has written. Leslie also likes to work on miniature dolls and dollhouses when she’s not writing and has written articles for a dollhouse magazine. She does cross-stitch (there’s a picture of St. George and the Dragon above her computer that took five years to do), embroiders, and can crochet three-dimensional objects without a pattern, but finds knitting way too complicated. She sings soprano in a choir and loves just about any type of music, especially gospel. Leslie lives in Calgary, Alberta, with her husband, three children and two demanding cats. This is her first children’s book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read in Ages!, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Hardcover)
Lyranel's song is impossible to put down once you start. Compelling characters and a beautiful medieval setting let you lose yourself in Lyranel's discovery of herself and the mysteries surrounding her world's plight. Leslie Carmichael has written the perfect story about acceptance, strength and friendship, while allowing the reader to imagine a world where a simple Song can turn your life upside down and change everything. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, cleverly imagined, November 12, 2005

This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Hardcover)
"I enjoyed Lyranel's Song from start to finish. Lyranel is an engaging and plucky heroine, and the dangerous and damaged world she must traverse and set to rights is made utterly believable by Leslie Carmichael's clever imagining of it, and especially by her careful seasoning of the tale with gritty details of medieval life. Highly recommended!" - Edward Willett, author of J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of Imaginary Worlds (a 2004 VOYA Non-Fiction Honor Book)

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, July 8, 2010
This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Paperback)
On her 12th birthday, Lyranel discovers she has the Singer gift. With her voice she can stay wild animals, heal wounds, and even change the weather.

When a plague threatens all people, especially Singers, Lyranel must find a way to master her gift and stop the plague before it spreads to her father's dukedom. Will Lyranel find a cure without getting sick herself? Will she find a way to control her gift?

A quick-read fantasy that has a lot of adventure in it. The characters are memorable and have an appealing spunky feel to them. The story is unique and well-written. The plot is well-developed and easy to follow.

Readers who like fantasy, adventure, and "save the world" scenario books will most likely devour LYRANEL'S SONG and want to read Ms. Carmichael's other book, THE AMULET OF AMON-RA.
