5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read in Ages!, December 3, 2005
This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Hardcover)
Lyranel's song is impossible to put down once you start. Compelling characters and a beautiful medieval setting let you lose yourself in Lyranel's discovery of herself and the mysteries surrounding her world's plight. Leslie Carmichael has written the perfect story about acceptance, strength and friendship, while allowing the reader to imagine a world where a simple Song can turn your life upside down and change everything. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, cleverly imagined, November 12, 2005

This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Hardcover)
"I enjoyed Lyranel's Song from start to finish. Lyranel is an engaging and plucky heroine, and the dangerous and damaged world she must traverse and set to rights is made utterly believable by Leslie Carmichael's clever imagining of it, and especially by her careful seasoning of the tale with gritty details of medieval life. Highly recommended!" - Edward Willett, author of J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of Imaginary Worlds (a 2004 VOYA Non-Fiction Honor Book)

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, July 8, 2010
This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Paperback)
On her 12th birthday, Lyranel discovers she has the Singer gift. With her voice she can stay wild animals, heal wounds, and even change the weather.

When a plague threatens all people, especially Singers, Lyranel must find a way to master her gift and stop the plague before it spreads to her father's dukedom. Will Lyranel find a cure without getting sick herself? Will she find a way to control her gift?

A quick-read fantasy that has a lot of adventure in it. The characters are memorable and have an appealing spunky feel to them. The story is unique and well-written. The plot is well-developed and easy to follow.

Readers who like fantasy, adventure, and "save the world" scenario books will most likely devour LYRANEL'S SONG and want to read Ms. Carmichael's other book, THE AMULET OF AMON-RA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!, March 3, 2007
This review is from: Lyranel's Song (Paperback)
Lyranel's Song by Leslie Carmichael carries its readers into a medieval fantasy where magic is created by powerful Singers-the magicians of her world.

When Lyranel awakes on her twelfth birthday and discovers she has the gift of Singing, she becomes frightened that her father, the Duke of Triost, will find out and ban her from his Duchy as he has all other Singers. She tries to hide her gift from the Duke, but that is no easy task. When Lyranel learns a plague is threatening the land, and especially Singers, she is drawn in. With the help of her friends, she searches for the source of the plague. It is during this adventure that Lyranel has to decide whether or not she will accept her true destiny.

Although she has powers that come from Singing, Lyranel was born with club feet, made worse through an attempted cure. This limits her movement, but although she needs crutches to walk, Lyranel does not allow her disability to be a crutch in her life. It is part of who she is, but it does not define her. She deals with the discomfort and inconvenience her mangled feet cause no more and no less than she has to, while she still focuses on her real job-that of discovering what it means to be a Singer.

Lyranel's Song is recommended for children ten years old and up and has several full-page interior illustrations by Elsbet Vance.
