Way ahead of its time,

This is an underground presentation of Eightball and MJG's pre-Suave House material and it is extremely tight. I could listen to this CD from track 2-14 without even considering skipping a track. It sounds very low-budget, but it is a nice change of pace from all the flashy no substance rap that predominates today. You have to realize that this is Southern rap from '91. If you could find a better Southern album from that time period besides Scarface or Geto Boys, you let me know. The beats and rhymes are way ahead of their time.

For starters this isn't really a new Eightball & MJG album, it's mostly songs the 2 recorded in the early 90's and a few of the tracks are on their earlier albums as well. Each of the 2 are on 10 songs, and each member has 3 solo's on here (Eightball's are much better if you ask me). Guests are minimal, on 3 songs (and the re-release of this has 2 solo's by other artists). Of the 15 songs (I'm reviewing the re-release), 2 or 3 I skip, 4 or 5 are ok, 1 is almost a classic, and the other 7 are good. Production is pretty good, a few low spots and no production credits are given. if you're a huge fan cop this, but of the 6 of their group albums I have and 4 solo's, it's in the bottom third.#2 - 7 (MJG & 8 ball) #3 - 7.5 (killa be, mjg, 8ball) #4 - 5.5 (MJG -- dirty song) #5 - 8 (killa bee, mjg, 8ball) #6 - 8 (psycho, 8ball, mjg -- smokin song) #7 - 7.5 (MJG) #8 - 9 (8ball -- tight beat) #9 - 9.5 (8ball -- another tight beat -- my favorite on here) #10 - 9 (8ball -- upbeat song) #11 - 6 (MJG & 8Ball) #12 - 8 (remix of #2 -- better beat) #13 - 7 (MJG) #14 - 8 (8Ball & MJG) #15 - 8 (Patty Man) #16 - 4 (Kool ACE) EIGHTBALL -- Primro Smith -- b. around 1971 -- Memphis, TN MJG -- Marlon Jermaine Goodwin -- b. 1/9/72 -- Memphis, TN Check all my reviews
