Some people have complained that item is a gimmick for germophobes- but I got these dispensers less for the germ factor than for the fact that we have young kids. When most children use manual dispensers they either pump like crazy and get waaaay too much soap, or they don't get enough. And we find that the manual pumps often end up getting knocked over on the counter when the kids try to pump. With the auto-dispensers, we waste less soap because the kids get just the right amount, and since they don't touch it, the pump stays upright.
While I'm not that concerned about my kids touching a 'germy' manual dispenser (because they do wash their hands AFTER pumping out the soap), I appreciate the fact that there is no yucky soap/water ring at the base of this automatic dispenser. And have you ever looked under the pump part of your manual dispenser? Most of them get gunked with soap and mildew unless you clean them every few days.
So we will continue using this auto dispenser, since it's neater and easier for my kids to use than a manual pump. I'm giving it three stars for the fact that it's not a refillable system (really Lysol? We are forced to buy more soap in your proprietary packaging instead of buying a big jug and refilling? That doesn't seem very eco-friendly!), and because I still feel it gives out too much soap.
This product shines in its initial purchase price and basic conceptual design. I initially bought five starter kits and outfitted my entire home with these units. I consistently used them for about a year, even going as far as trying my own soap formula to try to reduce refill cost. I say "formula" because the soap has to be watered-down a bit to allow the machine to continue to function properly. During my first attempt, I burned-up one of the unit motors because I had put too thick of soap inside the cartridge.
Currently, only one unit is running in my home. All the others have been retired to mothballs in the bathroom closet. The only reason one unit is still in place is so that the unreasonably high-priced cartridges can all get used. Cartridge cost aside, since I can refill them myself, what other costs are associated with this device? Batteries. Each unit requires four AA batteries. Battery life ranges from two to three months depending on use. If I can make each unit last, even six months, that means I would go through 40 AA batteries every year to keep these things running. I even tried rechargeable batteries, but realized that they simply will not hold an effective charge in this type of device. I was only getting about six weeks of rechargeable battery life in one of the units. I was using NiMh batteries. I just couldn't justify it. In summary, I look at it this way:
Touchless is nice for a commercial set-up, but not so much for a family of four.Read more ›
