Biography

Biography by Greg Prato

MC Lyte was one of the first female rappers to point out the sexism and misogyny that often runs rampant in hip-hop, often taking the subject head on lyrically in her songs and helping open the door for such future artists as Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Lyte began rhyming at the age of 12, which eventually led to a single, "I Cram to… Read more in Amazon's MC Lyte Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

MC Lyte is woman. Hear her roar. On her 1988 debut, Lyte as a Rock, the savvy Brooklyn native balances her obvious battle skills with perceptive street-corner observations, delivered fresh over funky drum-machine beats (provided by Audio Two, and Prince Paul, among others). Lyte introduced herself to the rap world with the single "I Cram to Understand U," a potent tale of losing her man to the real femme fatale: crack. With that song, she established herself as one of the few MCs able to make an antidrug song without drowning in clichés ("Capuccino"" is a later antidope gem of hers). Lyte's stories work because she tells them from a smart-mouthed tomboy perspective--always pragmatic, never pedantic. On "Paper Thin," she gets raw about romance, putting potential suitors in their place: "Maybe we'll kiss on the fifth or sixth date," followed by "and then maybe I'll let you play with my feet." Though her dating guidelines may seem quaint compared with the raunchy raps of Lil' Kim or Foxy Brown, they remind one that in 1988 female MCs were rocking the rap world with skills, not skin. Lyte still does: check her blazing cameo on Common's "A Film Called Pimp." --Lizz Mendez Berry

This review is from: Lyte As a Rock (Audio CD)
Talent is truly given by the MAN UPSTAIRS. Only talent will last. She is amazing. Everyone needs this album if what you are looking for is real hiphop. If Kim, 50 Cent and these jokes you consider real MCS then please dont waste ur money, but if Krs-one, Rakim, deLasoul is what u consider real hiphop get this album and see lyrical ingeniuty at its peak.

PEACE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Skills On Da Microphone, June 30, 2004
By
This review is from: Lyte As a Rock (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of MC LYTE from the start. Here is a very talented MC who is more than capable of rocking the mic. This album is very special as it is a very early effort from MC LYTE. Her ability to immerse the listener into her world is extra-ordinary. She shares her wisdom and insight with her audience in a very eloquent manner. MC LYTE is pure rap. Even today, despite its 1988 release, LYTE AS A ROCK continues to jam in the walkmans and CD players of true hip hop heads everywhere.

On 'Paper Thin', MC LYTE displays her amazing lyrical ability. She so delicately illustrates the importance of taking your time in a relationship. LYTE applies her knowledge to the track. This is the sign of a real MC. Trust me, this is a great jam. On 'Lyte Thee MC', LYTE shows us who is boss - she shows us just how dedicated she is to the artform of poetry. There is no competition when it comes to LYTE. None. 'I Cram To Understand U', produced by the Audio Two, is a classic old school hip hop jam. The beat of this jam is supreme. 'Kickin 4 Brooklyn' is slammin, and is also produced by the Audio Two. 'Lyte As A Rock', yet another Audio Two production, is a track which is almost too much for words - SLAMMIN!!! This uptempo track showcases MC LYTE's talent - The ultimate battle track. This track is sure to dismiss anyone who disses this album. Alliance, King of Chill and Prince Paul also produced tracks on this album. Can't forget those cats. Much love to them. '10% Dis' is great. On this track, MC LYTE shows her dominance on the mic. Never dis this MC, she rocks.

Buy this album if you apprecicate hip hop and its roots. 'LYTE AS A ROCK' came out in the 'Golden Age' of hip hop. Don't miss out.

Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing MC, amazing woman, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Lyte As a Rock (Audio CD)
This deserves more than 5 stars. If you think Lil Kim, Foxy, Trina or any of those trash female rappers out there today are the greatest, I suggest you to listen to this album. Mc Lyte was pure at its fullest. She delivered classics that are still legendary to this day. So forget the crap they play today and travel back into time with this album and you'll see why I hate today's MTV and BET with passion.
