En Mexico, como en otros lugares y a veces en otros tiempos, identificar un modo de hacer, un estilo, una actitud "correcta" con una tradicion, como estimulo de la identificacion nacionalista, tiende a encauzar la creacion hacia el estereotipo y la imitacion devaluada del modelo seguido, frustra la expresion de un pais rico y complejo, capaz de asimilar la globalizacion actual de nuestro fin de milenio. La seleccion de obras representadas en este libro, que como toda seleccion tiene algo de subjetivo y arbitrario, pretende regirse solo por la calidad arquitectonica, con independencia de las tendencias o escuelas a las que, abierta o veladamente, pertenezca cada autor. Por ello se han seleccionado obras de arquitectos de consolidado prestigio nacional e internacional con jovenes poco conocidos. Tambien estilistica y formalmente comparten el libro y la realidad arquitectonica mexicana corrientes tan diversas como el expresionismo volumetrico de Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon y las abstracciones de elementos vernaculos de Ricardo Legorreta, en contraste con las obras de Enrique Norten, proximas a las corrientes internacionales del momento. Tipologicamente, este libro muestra desde remodelaciones, de centros historicos o de casas, hasta distintos tipos de edificios de nueva planta.

This is THE book about new mexican architecture,

The book comes with two essays which I found very good to understand the contemporary position of mexican architects. The book shows the work of approximately 30 architects ranging from the famous T. Gonzalez de Leon and latest AIA winner Ricardo Legorreta to internationaly unknown designers. The projects shown are excellent and provide a strong insight of contemporary mexican design. Among the designers you will find Norten, Broid, Landa, and the promising Mexico City firm LBC and many others with the same design skills.The author of the book did an excellent job in choosing the projects. The photography is very good. I wish there was more diversity since most of the projects are in Mexico City. I hope there will be a volume two coming out soon.
