5.0 out of 5 stars Without peer - but for a limited audience, August 22, 2004

This book is first and foremost an academic work, with numerous citations and no pictures. If that turns you off, it probably isn't for you. If however you are interested in an intellectually rigorous look at modern military small arms development in the United States then this book is without peer, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is also an excellent case study in the functioning of military bureaucracies and the procurement process. I'm amazed this book is still available new as I imagine it has a very limited audience. If you haven't sampled "The Black Rifle," "Black Rifle II" or "The Great Rifle Controversy" (out of print) then you will probably want to try those first. But if you are looking for more information about the early history (it dates from 83, but basically stops in the late 60s) then I know of no other work that speaks with similar authority, and you too might consider it the star of your collection.
