3.0 out of 5 stars Good... Flawed, but nostalgic
This DVD is a decent collection of episodes. The transfer is not the best, but these are 80's cartoons, so they don't have much to work with. The audio hisses like crazy. I have no idea why I was so big into this cartoon, it's actually kinda bad, but it's nostalgic. It's fun to remember all the toys that I bought like a dumb American consumer. :) If you want...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good 80's cartoon made it to DVD, December 31, 2004
This review is from: M.A.S.K. - Animated Volume 1 (DVD)
Led by Matt Traker, Mobile Armored Strike Komand (MASK) agents were regularly dispatched from their Boulder Hill headquarters to fight the equally high-tech VENOM agents. We never get a location for the series, but I have reason to believe that it is somewhere in the mountain states or California.

The animation holds up fairly well 20 years later, but the catchiest part of this cartoon was the lyrics to the theme song. 'Secret agents working overtime, fighting crime....' Each MASK agent had a mask (duh) which emitted a special power and a vehicle which transformed from 'normal' to 'battle' mode instantly.

In addition to comanding a team of multicultural agents, Matt has his hands full trying to be a father to Scott (who can periodically get in the way, along with his robot pal T-Bob). I think that Scott was supposed to draw in many more young viewers to this series, but I never felt they were great characters. I personally would have rather been out fighting against VENOM than clowning around with the two of them.

MASK was a good cross between Transformers (unarguably THE most popular 80's robot toy) and the ongoing James Bond series.

I loved this show as a kid so I had to get the DVD. What I found was well worth the $14 paid. I was doubtful at first since the packaging is simple and the spine of the DVD defined the acronym erroneously as "Mobilized" Armored Strike Command. With hestiation, I popped it in the DVD player and what first came up was a very professional "DIC animation" graphic. The Jade Entertainment logo sequence that followed was very simplistic and almost amateurish. The Main menu gives you three options:Play, Scene Selection, and Extras. I was excited at the prospect of toy commercials or some such in the Extras but only found 3 clips of 10 seconds each roughly. They are merely clipped from the main video and are the character descriptions by the computer of Bruce Sato, Alex Sector, and Brad Turner during the mission selection portion of the show.

Disappointed somewhat, I pressed play for the show. The transfer quality of the animation was really good....not grainy at all. The audio quality was fine as well. Sadly, there are only 5 episodes. I would have liked to see something more along the lines of the Transformers or GI Joe releases but it is nice to have some episodes since my VHS tape is wearing out. I feel I got enough for the value, yet I don't know if I would pay $14 each 12 more times just to complete all of season 1 were future volumes to be released. If they would bundle more episodes together and skip the useless "extras" in this edition, it would be a super product. Either that or dig up old toy commercials and include them in the extras.

So, four stars because I really wanted this to be good and it didn't disappoint...however, an extra star would be easily acheived by including more episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I mis-read the title, September 14, 2005

I mis-read the title of the DVD as being the first season of M.A.S.K., not Volume 1. However, the 5 episodes on the DVD are in excellent condition. The first episode, The Deathstone, has been transferred with the film backwards (the people are driving in the passenger side seat, their hair is parted on the wrong side, etc.) but the quality of the animation (video) and sound are still great. The other four episodes were transferred correctly and the video/sound are great on those as well. My brother and his family were recently over for a visit, and his kids watched this DVD while here. They are 14 and 11 years old, and they both told me that it was the coolest cartoon they had ever seen, and the look on their faces when I told them how old the cartoons were was priceless!! Even then, they still when on the rest of the day about the different cars, masks, etc. I'd highly recommend this DVD to anyone who was a fan of the show, or just loves cool cars!

If you simply like 80's cartoons, there are better out there.

This was one cool cartoon show for anyone to remember, it had cool animation, and the theme song rocked! (though I didn't remember it that much, only when I downloaded if from a web site recently). They have to air the reruins on Cartoon Network or any other TV network out there, they can't leave shows like this collection dust!

A really great cartoon. I really enjoyed it growing up in the 1980s. The toys were just as fun!!
Recently, a friend and I completed a movie script for the show. We are hoping it will be made someday into a feature film!! Join us here if you are a fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars This DVD is Horrible!, January 10, 2006
This review is from: M.A.S.K. - Animated Volume 1 (DVD)
The picture quality is good but the sound quality is very crappy. Sounds like it was recorded from a Video tape that was in EP. Avoid this DVD since no other episodes came out.
