M-Audio - What happened to the pro gear?
on March 4, 2014
I'm a Berklee College of Music graduate and have used M-Audio gear for 6+ years. I ordered this bad boy, stoked beyond belief and ready to go. I had used the Axiom Pros in all the studios and labs are Berklee but it seems those have since been discontinued? Maybe that was only out when Avid owned M-Audio, that's my guess at least. Anyway, received it within 2 days (as always Amazon Prime, I love you, you did great.) and got it all set up running in Pro Tools 10. Downloaded all my drivers, did the usual setup, checked to see if there were any known bugs, etc. Well about 15 minutes into my session working in Kontakt, I notice a few of the keys just stop playing as if there was some short in the wiring where the key meets the signal or whatever it is. Happened on a few of the keys where they would just stop playing! Checked it in Kontakt, Xpand2, and a few others - all the same keys and just random cutting out. Sometimes they would sustain for a bit longer but in the end the signal would cut out. So as always when something goes wrong - to the forums! I spent about 2 days checking every forum I could for this problem and there was nothing about it anywhere. Tried it in a few different programs (Logic and GarageBand) and tried it on my macbook pro. Nope. Figured it was just faulty so I sent it in for a replacement.
Well, as excited as I was to get the replacement, I was let down. As soon as I got it setup I did my check to see if the keys would sustain... Well, found the same issue but on a different key this time. That was it. I tried contacting M-Audio support but you have to pay to place a call to support? Lame.
In the end I ended up sending it back and was rather sad about it. I've really loved M-Audio but even the feel of this keyboard felt cheaper and more plasticy than the nice, heavy duty metal old Axiom Pros. As an old fan of M-Audio it sucked but I ended up talking to a few friends and went with a Novation Impulse 61. Never used a Novation product before and decided to risk it off a few excellent recommendations from some professors and friends. It absolutely rocks, feels better, and gets the job done beyond anything I could imagine. Definitely recommend it. As hard as it is to say goodbye to M-Audio, until they get their stuff together - I'm done.
Hope this helps someone out there. Maybe I just had some bad luck with it but 2 was enough for me. As a professional audio engineer and composer, time is money!
