Product Description

The X-Session Pro USB MIDI Mixer Controller is the easiest way to bring traditional DJ mixer-style control to the world of computer DJ-ing and live performance. With a single USB connection, you get dedicated tactile controls for volume, pitch, EQ, cueing, transport and a crossfader. The X-Session Pro fuses the standard controls of a two-channel DJ mixer with the transport and pitch controls of a turntable or DJ CD player, enabling you to control everything from a single interface. The mixer controls allow you to adjust level, cueing, EQ and effects, plus make smooth crossfades while the integrated transport and pitch controls allow you start, stop and beat-match digital files within software applications. The included Torq LE software organizes everything you need to DJ into a single, easy-to-use workspace. Two virtual decks let you load, cue and play back digital files and will even automatically beat-match the files in an instant. The unit is a class-compliant MIDI device under Mac OS X and Windows XP, so you'll never need extra drivers to make it interface with your favorite DJ applications, soft synths or DAWs from Torq LE and Torq to Ableton Live, Pro Tools M-Powered and more.

I purchased this product because I had no dj experience, and wanted to learn how to mix songs, and the basics of being a dj. My only complaint about this product is that they should take the word pro out of the title, because it is hardly a professional product in terms of price, build or features. But none the less, this product performed well for me. Setup is basic and easy, install the software, and the rest is plug and play. I also ended up purchasing the connecitv audio interface, and still use the X-session for midi controlling the mix. The best aspect of this product is the uniqueness of it. No other pure midi control mixers exist. And although many analog mixers have midi control as a feature, they are too expensive and complex for a beginning dj. After using this product, I am now comfortable getting around a professional analog dj mixer. For only $100, this is a great introduction to dj software and hardware. On the other hand, the software it comes with only limits you to 3 effects and no sampling, so I would recommend at least upgrading to the full version of torq, or using the x-session with other software (serato, ableton live, traktor). Overall, I am glad that I invested in this product, it got me through my first dj gig, and hopefully many more.

I bought this as a cheap way to get up and going not long after I first invested in Ableton Live. I've mapped the knobs and buttons for Ableton's effects and triggers, and it works well for that. However, it really isn't designed well for controlling Ableton, and the way I've had to rig it often feels counter intuitive. The biggest problem I have the cross-fader. It went out after I'd used it less than a dozen times. Yeah, it's true I only paid $100 for it. However, I've always had good luck with M-Audio, and a cross-fader that goes out that fast but isn't replaceable just blows.
