5.0 out of 5 stars Maria, March 4, 2005
This review is from: M (Audio CD)
In my mind this is undeniably Ayu's best song I've her of. Beautiful sad ballad, and from what I read pretty lonley lyrics. When I first herd it, I instantly fell in love with it, because it's peaceful ballad, the picking up the pace to a J-pop /ballad type song. The first time I herd this was on her I am CD.

I don't know why, but I just hate remixes some are all right like dubs remix, the winter remix, and te weather report remix, but they don't have the good ol' impact or feel that the orignal one had.

This song is excellent, but unless you're a diehard Ayu fan, I don't really recomend this CD, you're better off getting I am, the CD that had a boatload of hits, and excellent songs.

peace

Ayumi Hamasaki has had many singles out, and I would deffinatley say this one was the best! I absolutely LOVE how it starts out slow, then gradually gets faster, then at the end gradually gets slower again. I recommend this single for anyone who is just getting into jpop music, or is a current listener!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holds its own, May 30, 2002

M is a very strong single; probably the most substantial of the other singles I have. Tracks 6-8 are not as outstanding as the rest, but they are by no means bad and still serve the CD well by fitting in their niches well.

Dub's work once again serves as a good introductory track before the rest of the CD comes, Yuta's Weather Mix is definitely a bold (and successful!) move, Seiki Sato serves up a great mix that could alone earn him his name (as the Nicely Nice man), and the KO-I's Neurotic Eye remix will get your blood pumping. The CD ends with the best instrumental I've seen on a single that nicely accentuates the variety of instruments (especially piano and chimes).

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad!, August 17, 2001

M is an awesome song, although I have heard better. I really like the way it starts out slow, and then later in the song gets more of a hard beat to it, then goes slow again at the end. And of course, there's more amazing writing from Ayu! This one's worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, November 14, 2001

Awesome! One of Ayumi Hamasaki's best. The remix versions are not that good though. Try to find Above and Beyond remix of this song from her latest remix album: Ayu-Cyber Trance. That remix is worth listening and provides a new flavour of the original tune.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hamasaki's Best Song To Date, July 26, 2007
This review is from: M (Audio CD)
"M", Ayumi Hamasaki's nineteenth single, is considered her greatest song by many fans, and with good reason. To begin, the structure and melody of the song is ingenious. It starts out slowly, then in the middle hits what is probably the greatest bridge in musical history, continues slowly, and then picks up speed, throwing in electric guitar. Strings, piano, and triangle are just three of the instruments used by HAL (the arranger of this song.)

The lyrics are awesome, as well. The "M" refers to "Maria", whom Hamasaki talks with over in the song. (Who the "Maria" is is uncertain, but it most likely refers to the virgin Mary.) The song's theme is typical for Hamasaki in that it has tones of sadness, but hope, faith, and love also can be found in the beautiful lyrics, as can be seen from a few excerpts (translated from the Japanese):

"Today in this city, two people will meet and fall in love. When they do, the curtains are violently flung open."

"As I look around, everyone hurries busily on by. Also, I have noticed that the signs of winter have come early this year."

"Maria, there is someone I should love. At times, I bear very deep wounds. But all my wounds are healed by the one I should love."

Buy it; this is quite possibly the best song you will ever purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favorite song!, June 15, 2002

Ayumi Hamasaki has written some of her best lyrics in this song, and the video, if you get a chance to see it, is awesome as well. Some of her remixes arent the best thing, but her acoustic/instrumental remixes are nice. I reccommend this CD for any fan of the song or just a fan of Ayu in general.
