Take my word for it, you don't want a high desity weaterstripping for a door - it won't adapt to the varying gaps to be filled, and you probably won' be able to latch the door. The 1/4" by 1/2" size fits most OLDER exterior doors. On the top and lock side of the door, mount the weatherstripping on the edge of the door stop, but on the hinge side, mount it on the face of the jamb just inside the door stop. If you mount it on the stop by the hinges, closing the door will pull it off. Been using this type for 50 years. Oh, Amazon shows this product as a HIGH density, but it (product #02071) actually IS the low density that that you want. If you have a newer door unit that has a weatherstripping that looks more like auto door weatherstripping, you have to pull off a section so you can find and replace it with similar product. These generally have a spline that inserts ito a slot.

I couldn't live without this product. The low density foam fills varying gaps, is soft enough that it doesn't interfere with proper closing of the door, and it's very inexpensive. The low density foam can crush down to almost nothing, but you'd be amazed at how much the narrowest strip of high density foam can interfere with proper closure. I just spent over 2 hours trying different sizes of the high density foam on one door, but it will not close properly so the deadbolt works, no matter how I try!

Use your drill bits to find the biggest gap and buy the thinnest low density foam that will work. There is no need to "allow" for extra thickness to insure that the foam is compressed a little bit. As long as it touches, it will work.

This open cell foam does degrade over time, but it lasts as long as the paint (in Florida). If you do need to replace the foam before you need to re-paint, the remaining adhesive can be removed with mineral spitits so it doesn't accumulate and cause a gummy layer, and the foam is very inexpensive. I've been using this product on my house for 32 years, and every time I re-paint and/or re-apply the low density foam, the result is as good as new!

Home Depot, Lowes, and a couple of local hardware stores have quit stocking the low density foam. That's why I am at Amazon.com

pros:
adhesive is awesome! It will stick to anything and stay stuck, as long as the surface is pretreated (cleaned with water, followed with rubbing alcohol, 91% if possible)
if it accidentally is placed in the wrong spot, easy to pull off and restock it
creates a great air tight barrier
low density or high density, both work well to lock out air
best price on Amazon!

Cons
if your window/door has equal gaps throughout, you will have to buy a variety, or a smaller size and trim the insulating foam
if you don't pre clean your surfaces, it will come off

I used this to insulate my patio door and front door. works amazing! i should've bought it sooner!

My wife & I designed & built a two story passive solar home back in 1986 and it has about 36 Weather Shield casement windows (wood frame) triple glased low E coating, etc. We went with these because at the time they gave the tighest air seal and were the most energy effivcient of anything on the market. Now most of the vinyl seals have deteriorated or fallen off due to aging oxidation and UV damage. I've tried many types of adhesive backed foam tape and the M-D Building products 02071 works best because it is easily compressed. This stuff doesn't seem to be available any more in the usual hardware supply stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc. They only carry the higher desity foam which just doesn't work. I actually need to run two parallel strips of this foam tape around the inside perimeter of each window frame. The strips are separated by a 1/2 inch air gap. The low density M-D foam compresses easily so my windows close far enough to engage the lever latch on the inside that pulls the window tight against the frame and locks the window closed.

These two parallel runs get the window close or equal to the original seal and I'm pretty happy with the result. I'm just glad that M-D still makes it and it's available on Amazon. I bought 30 packs of this with 17 ft in each pack. I think I'll spend the rest of this summer and next fall gettting this project completed but it will be well worth it. It's amazing how much air and dust can get into the house if your windows and doors aren't air tight. I also plan to use this tape around the old magnetic door seals.

Bought this to line the edges of a few panels in my car that vibrated and squeaked a little when I drove but after installing this my problem was solved. Easy to peel off and cut to desired length. It sticks really well and seems to be reasonable quality.

I had never used weatherstripping before, so I foolishly went to a home improvement store and purchased high density rubber stripping for my old wood exterior doors on my apartment. Of course, that didn't work out well. Old wood doors simply will not close with that type of high density, rubber weatherstripping, so I decided to do some research before making another mistake and discovered this product. Thank good ness I discovered this! It has worked out great.

One thing I love is how sticky this stuff is compared to the rubber-type. I had no problems getting this to adhere and with it being "low density" it allows my old and warped wood doors to close and lock properly. It sealed out the sunlight and smoke that was drifting in through the gaps (fireplaces in the neighborhood produce a lot of smoke!) Now, I'm trying to find a product to completely seal the bottom of the door. This "low density" weatherstripping solved about 75 percent of the problem, now if I can get something adequate to keep the drafts at the bottom, I'll be set!
