I read the reviews and was concerned that one person had such a difficult time using this hand cutter. I purchased it because I have 18 inch porcelain tiles and couldn't find an affordable wet saw that would handle them. The M-D 49047 has scored and snapped every tile to perfection with ease, any errors were my own. A great tool for this 66 year-old woman.

My experience with this tool was very negative.I was unable to get a clean cut using this tool. The tile I was cutting was porcelin tile which has a harder surface than regular ceramic tile. But,I ended up with broken tile.My large porcelin tile cost over $6 each, so I couldn't afford to use this tool.Note: As a general building contractor ,I do know how to use tools properly.

I bought this to install 13" stone-look (irregular surface) porcelain tile and, for the most part, it works like a charm. Much faster than a wet saw for straight cuts. Diagonals take a bit more effort and I did have a couple of ruined tiles. That's partially because the guide isn't great for diagonal cutting and you need to be very careful to get the score over the center of the cutter before snapping the tile. If you need to do a lot of diagonal cuts on expensive tile I'd go with a wet saw. I did find that the fence/guide just doesn't want to stay in place no matter how much I tighten the knob - it's pretty flimsy. I never had to score any of the tiles more than once (as specified in the instructions) - straight cuts snapped clean every time. I imagine a lot depends on how much pressure you put on the handle for that one score.

Still, I'd recommend this to anyone who needs to do a lot of straight cuts - works just great for that.

I'm a general contractor. The first job I did was with 18" porcelain tiles. The first tiles I cut were not snapping on the cut line, or would split off. I did a close inspection and discovered that the cutter blade was "dog-tracking" over the snap bar, and the fence was not set to 90 degrees. I was very disappointed in the quality control at the factory. I should not have had to adjust a new tool in order for it to work properly. After adjusting, I would still infrequently have a problem with the tiles not snapping straight the whole length. I'm not sure if it was due to the tiles being approximately 3/8 inches thick or what the matter was. I resorted to using the wet saw thereafter. These tiles were too expensive to have so much waste.

After looking at the available cutter's, I decided to go with the Best one and I do not regret the decision as this cutter is far superior to any I have ever used .Super cutting ability, I only used 13 inch tiles, but I have the capacity to do 20 inch in the future if the need arises.
Buy the best the first time and you will never go wrong....

This tile cutter is ok for making horizontal or vertical cuts but diagonals....NO WAY. I still can't figure out how to use it to make a diagonal cut. The cutter does not allow the tile to be snapped in the middle it can only be snapped when the cutter is placed to the top SINCE THE CUTTING WHEEL CAN'T MOVE UPWARDS......not flexible enough.

This is a great tile cutter that can handle large tiles. It is the exact same unit as the Kobalt model sold at Lowes for around $110, so don't waste your time at the big box store, buy it here and save around $40. This cutter is built very well, it should last several years. If you're only doing a small project or a single room, you can skimp and pick up a $25 cutter at a big box store. The rails on these cheaper cutters tend to flex and bow after about 50 or 60 cuts, so it will be junk when your done using it. I've used the M-D cutter on several big (1000 sq. ft. or more) tile jobs, and all I've had to do is change the cutter wheel out ocassionaly. Highly recommend this cutter to anyone that is serious about high quality, durable tools.

I researched several other products before purchasing this model because I didn't want to spend $450 on a wet saw. I even called the company to confirm it would cut ceramic and porcelain tile. I cut a 16 X 16 ceramic tile effortlessly which yielded clean edges. The fabric carrying case is sturdy and well made. Who needs a wet saw when you have this, unless of course you're cutting a 90 in a piece of tile. I use an angle grinder with a diamond blade.
