Amazon.com Product Description

M1 Tank Platoon 2 is a ground warfare simulation following in the footsteps of its predecessor. MicroProse's design and engineering team, led by M1's original creator, Scott Spanburg, has reconstructed the M1A2 with breathtaking accuracy. The game offers five campaign theaters: Gulf War II, North Africa, Russian Far East, the Balkans, and Central Europe. With realistic vehicles, artificial intelligence, and a tactical reference encyclopedia, M1 Tank Platoon 2 is an impressive simulation of modern ground warfare.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sabot up, July 11, 2000

Oddly, this isn't very different to the original 'M1 Tank Platoon', a game that came out in 1988. The graphics have been improved, but the gameplay is much the same - you use a map to command a platoon of tanks and supporting units, 'spiriting' yourself into the command areas of each tank as and when you feel like it. For much of the game you'll be playing as either the all-seeing tactician or as a gunner (the computer is usually a better shot than you, but that's less fun), and the blend of wargame and action game is neatly done - whilst 'on the ground' you can control your platoon effectively by simply pointing your turret at something and commanding your driver to head in that direction. There are some problems, though - the original, pre-patched release was bugged to high heaven, and accurate gunnery control is unusually tricky, no matter which control method you choose. The joystick is over-sensitive, whilst the mouse is like dragging through treacle. Your main gun continues rotating until you apply an equal and opposite control, making small corrections extremely hard. The simple 'lase and lock' system from the original game is missing here, meaning that you either have to manually aim, or let the computer fire, which is no fun at all. As with the first game, the M1 is almost invicible, and to offset this you find yourself against great numbers of the Other People. The battles take place over fairly large squares of often randomly-generated rolling terrain, complete with detailed towns and villages which, if you feel like, you can blow up. The sight of fields of enemy armour burning at night is extremely evocative, and one that you will see quite often, as the game boils down to a series of long-range shooting matches. The enemy tend to attack in a straight line, directly towards you, although sometimes they attempt to flank you (the game comes alive at that point as, at close range, all tanks are equal). The addition of supporting forces is handy, but with the exception of other M1s, you spend most of your time moving them away from danger. It's still the best simulation of tank warfare out there at the moment - the problem is that commanding a platoon of M1s is not in itself particularly exciting, as, provided that you keep yourself facing the enemy, you are effectively unkillable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Tank Sim Available..., April 14, 2003

Jeremy Schave (Sioux Falls, SD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: M1 Tank Platoon 2 (CD-ROM)
If you have played the first M1 Tank then you will be happy to know that they have improved the game in some departments. This game is, by far, the best tank simulator available. The graphics are outstanding and the playability is quite high. Some of the weaknesses:
* Handful of annoying glitches without the patch.
* Cannot enter the driver's compartment (unlike the 1st game).
* Air support (especially helicopters) are not very supporting.
* Almost all missions are at night.
* Single player missions are no longer categorized by type. Rather, they are given names like "Fire in the sky" which doesn't tell you if you are attacking or defending without reading the briefing.

Strengths include:
* Wicked good graphics (including tanks, helicopters, and individual infantry people).
* More types of artilery and quite effective.
* Ability to rename each member of your tank crew.
* New ammo types (MPAT and STAFF).
* Realistic AI and great tank explosions.
* Grab the .50 cal and lay down the law.
* Map screen allows more control including facing direction and the use of way points.
* Extensive training program, practive missions, videos, and reading material.
* Re-enact Desert Storm battles or go on campains.
* Multiplayer supported (I haven't tested as of yet)

This game is no longer being manufactured as far as I can tell so make sure you grab a copy. Plans for a M1 Tank 3 were scrapped, sadly. There is nothing quite like the thrill of driving your tank to the top of plateau only to realize you are knee-deep in the enemy. Sabot Up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Game, June 14, 2000

The graphics on the game are good. But your mostly just going over hills and grass. There is a multiplayer option, or you can do missons. You also get to promote the people on your Platoon for doing a good job.
