The visual history of a classic rifle., August 27, 1998
This review is from: The M1 does my talking!: The U.S. M1 Garand rifle in pictures : World War Two and the Korean War, also origin, development, and postwar ... One to the M14 (Weapons in pictures series)
This is a great little book (80 pages). It is not a technical manual filled with dry data. It is not really a formal history either. Since the majority of the content of this book is pictures, I prefer to think of it as a scrapbook of life experiences. In this case, the life experiences of the M-1 Garand rifle. Beyond the obvious combat photography, the captioned photos include training scenes and manufacturing operations, as well as reproductions of visual aids and WWII poster art. For those readers that lived during the era of the M-1 Garand, or lived with the rifle as a serviceman, the book will bring back many memories. For those readers that are too young, or were not even alive at the time, the book will help place an otherwise wood and steel artifact into a human context. This book is a must-have for the Garand collector and history buff alike.

A must-have for any M1 historian, enthusiast, or owner., March 26, 2010
This review is from: The M1 does my talking!: The U.S. M1 Garand rifle in pictures : World War Two and the Korean War, also origin, development, and postwar ... One to the M14 (Weapons in pictures series)
Originally published in 1992 by Robert Bruce, "The M1 does MY talking!" is a fascinating book. 79 pages long, it contains not only a vast picture history of the M1 from its entry into the Allied side of World War II, all the way into the Vietnam War and the development of the M14, but also plenty of text to go with the pictures. The many propaganda posters that talked about it directly or that it appeared in being shown in the book is a plus. The M1 saw combat in three major wars- World War II, Korea, and Vietnam- and impressed men such as General George S. Patton, III enough that Patton himself said "The M1 is the greatest battle implement ever devised." It saw service with 25 nations. A few even ended up on the other side in Vietnam- ironic that a weapon Patton was son fond of ended up in the hands of communist guerrillas. The M1 was a superb combat rifle, one of the greatest ever made, and this book, with words and pictures, shows why as well as any book written about it. The M1 took a lot of lives, but that was and is its job. And it saved a lot of lives, too. And that is also its job. The report of the M1 has been heard in every corner of the world, and this book truly does this magnificent rifle and its legacy justice.
