Product Description

Editorial Review

Magic: The Gathering is a fantasy card game, and this starter set contains everything two players need. There are no dice or spinners, and there's no game board. There is just a playing guide for beginners, a rulebook for when things get complicated, and two richly illustrated card decks. The object of the game is to reduce your opponent from 20 to 0 points. You use Land cards (like Island, Forest, and Swamp) to pay for the use of Creatures and Sorceries (spells). Some colorful characters from the game include Samite Healer, Flame Spirit, and Rhox; the Sorceries have names such as Shock, Lava Axe, and Time Ebb. An instructional CD-ROM is included. --Richard Farr

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT value and also big fun!, November 7, 2000

You really get a lot for what you pay for. The foil-rhox it comes with is worth about 6 bucks, so you could argue that you only really paid four bucks for it!

The software it comes with is great. The educational video is very nicely done. It's entertaining and very informative. The tutorials in the software are basically games, and get progressively more complex as they move along. Even once I understood how Magic was played and had the rules downpacked (which didn't take long), the tutorials are still fun to play because they're essentially like playing Magic against an opponent.

If you've been wanting to learn Magic the Gathering, you can't go wrong by starting here. You'll have a lot of fun doing so, and feel good knowing that you got a ton for you money!

Magic: the Gathering is a great game, and this set is an excellent introduction to it. Magic's best strength is the hundreds of cards available, which make the game constantly fresh and full of new strategies. However, this is also what scares new players. Thus, this box set.

This starter set is designed for 2 brand new players to learn the game. Each player gets a sealed deck of cards, and a play book in the form of a comic to teach them how to play. The cards are preset in a certain order, so the entire experience is well ordered and guided. Just read the books, follow the instructions, and a very random, chaotic game is broken down into simple elements. Excellent.

This eliminates the traditional method of learning a game - paging through the rulebook for 15 minutes after every turn, later realizing that you've got everything wrong from the get-go, etc.

I found the CD-ROM games to be even better than the hands-on lessons. The basic computer game is also guided to teach the player exactly what they need to know, but without another player, you can go as fast or as slow as you need to learn. After the basic game, you are free to play a more advanced game, with less structure and less guidance. Still, cards and rules are gradually introduced, and each is well explained in clear speech and big, bright text. The advanced game is actually fun enough that I've played it a few times afterwards.

All this is to introduce you to one of the best new games created in the past 10 years. You should try this out.

I picked this up a lonnnng time ago, and once i tore through the shrink wrap, and read through the rules, played the demo disk, and played a couple games with my friends, I found this game was one of the best things that ever happened to me. The demo disk teaches you to play VERY easily, even though the game is quite complex. Even though it is pretty tough to get every rule down, it shouldn't take you too long to get the basics down (playing spells, attacking, blocking, etc.). A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO MAGIC THE GATHERING!
