5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT value and also big fun!
You really get a lot for what you pay for. The foil-rhox it comes with is worth about 6 bucks, so you could argue that you only really paid four bucks for it!

The software it comes with is great. The educational video is very nicely done. It's entertaining and very informative. The tutorials in the software are basically games, and get progressively more complex...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners but for anyone else its a lousy set
The Magic Starter set helps kids a lot with learning how to play. The CD is especially helpful because it teaches kids how to play through a number of mini-games. The game is also playable right out of the box for two players. The reason I only gave it two stars in fun was because of one major problem with it. The problem is that the Starter cards are not allowed to be...

You really get a lot for what you pay for. The foil-rhox it comes with is worth about 6 bucks, so you could argue that you only really paid four bucks for it!

The software it comes with is great. The educational video is very nicely done. It's entertaining and very informative. The tutorials in the software are basically games, and get progressively more complex as they move along. Even once I understood how Magic was played and had the rules downpacked (which didn't take long), the tutorials are still fun to play because they're essentially like playing Magic against an opponent.

If you've been wanting to learn Magic the Gathering, you can't go wrong by starting here. You'll have a lot of fun doing so, and feel good knowing that you got a ton for you money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Awesome, Awesome intro to Magic cards, January 28, 2003

Magic: the Gathering is a great game, and this set is an excellent introduction to it. Magic's best strength is the hundreds of cards available, which make the game constantly fresh and full of new strategies. However, this is also what scares new players. Thus, this box set.

This starter set is designed for 2 brand new players to learn the game. Each player gets a sealed deck of cards, and a play book in the form of a comic to teach them how to play. The cards are preset in a certain order, so the entire experience is well ordered and guided. Just read the books, follow the instructions, and a very random, chaotic game is broken down into simple elements. Excellent.

This eliminates the traditional method of learning a game - paging through the rulebook for 15 minutes after every turn, later realizing that you've got everything wrong from the get-go, etc.

I found the CD-ROM games to be even better than the hands-on lessons. The basic computer game is also guided to teach the player exactly what they need to know, but without another player, you can go as fast or as slow as you need to learn. After the basic game, you are free to play a more advanced game, with less structure and less guidance. Still, cards and rules are gradually introduced, and each is well explained in clear speech and big, bright text. The advanced game is actually fun enough that I've played it a few times afterwards.

All this is to introduce you to one of the best new games created in the past 10 years. You should try this out.

I picked this up a lonnnng time ago, and once i tore through the shrink wrap, and read through the rules, played the demo disk, and played a couple games with my friends, I found this game was one of the best things that ever happened to me. The demo disk teaches you to play VERY easily, even though the game is quite complex. Even though it is pretty tough to get every rule down, it shouldn't take you too long to get the basics down (playing spells, attacking, blocking, etc.). A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO MAGIC THE GATHERING!

I , who has never even touched a Magic card before, played the CD-Rom beginner game once, and almost completely understood the game. I think Magic is the best card game there is. I remember a few years ago when I got the Pokemon game, I played it once, and never played it again. I have already played Magic at least a dozen times and even won a few of those times. This is THE best for beginners.

I really liked this deck. I got it as a birthday present, and have liked it ever since. I am a collector of Magic cards, though I almost never have anyone to play it with. This is a good thing to buy if:
a. you are a beginner
b. you need lands
c. you play Magic: The Gathering.

As you can see, I really enjoyed this product.

If you buy this and you are a new player, you will learn how to play, fast. You only need the CD to learn(I did not use the cards). On the cd there is an video in which you and another person can play along to.But if you just watch it to learn without playing the cards you will do good. This CD also has guided games which can also really help you. With this I think you can learn MAGIC in about 2 days. Also.........All the cards are 6th edition except for the RHOX card.

I have played MTG for a couple years now, and when I saw a MTG game that had a CD-ROM I had to get it so I could continue to play, since my brother won't play with me, because I [need help] but that's besides the point, so I got it and it was what I expected, you could play the game against a computer opponent, except it didn't explain a lot of the terms like Cummulative Upkeep, which is really the only one I don't understand, anyway new players don't need to worry about that, unless they have an expert deck, I just noticed this, but I tend to write in one very long sentence.

I have been playing the Magic:The Gathering card game for about five years now. This starter set is a great introduction to the game, but some may find that they are ready to move on to a difficulty beyond starter quickly. There is a lot of strategy not explained in Starter, but that can be a good thing, so as not to overwhelm some new players.Overall it is a good intorduction to a great game, both educational and fun(I know that Magic has definaly improved my vocabular,if not my spelling):).Also, Rhox is not very valuable, as so many people have written, and is hardly "very, very, rare". (...) Some people may get the wrong impresion from the fact this is a different printing of the card, and thus is not worth the foil price of the Rhox from Nemisis. I have prattled on long enough, just go buy it, now. (I mean it, I can see you! Dont hit that close window button, BUY IT!!) :)

This is amazing for the beginner, player, or collector. It has a very educational CD with about 5 tutorial games and an educational video teaching the basics of Magic:The Gathering. If you can't play the CD, there is a preconstructed game you can play with a friend or by yourself that teaches you how to play step-by-step. For the collector, there is a load of cards, and a premium foil rare card. In a magazine, it shows the premium foil card on average selling for around ... which is much cheaper than the price of the set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game, rotten price, June 13, 2003

Magic is, in my opinion, the best of all of the collectible card games. Subtle strategies in deck creation and in gameplay mean that skill is key to success, but there's enough randomness (hey, they're cards) to allow a novice to win some of the time, thus increasing the fun for all.

However, you can get this game at target for six bucks less!
