In 1775 none of the scattered settlements from the Penobscot River to the St. Croix had been in existence for even fifteen years. Legally its 4,000 settlers were squatters - pioneers resentful of the restraints of Massachusetts settled society, and now of Great Britain. Out of this ferment of talent, ambition, and perversity came some of the most belligerent and successful revolutionaries. A good read and most useful book which we recommend highly.
