Stevan Mena's score for MALEVOLENCE is an incredible combination of tension building chords, percussion, eerie and effective sound design, and haunting, beautiful, mood-setting themes. Mena's film is an entertaining, genuinely scary, and atmospheric cinematic experience and the same can be said of his wonderful score. The content and texture of the film score for MALEVOLENCE has been likened to works by John Carpenter, Charles Bernstein, Harry Manfredini, and Wayne Bell. This release is a limited edition pressing of 1500 and features a complete score and full color inserts. The 12-panel full color insert includes lavish imagery from the film, a forward by Robert Galluzzo of IconsOfFright/Fangoria, and liner notes by Stevan Mena the composer. This collector's limited edition also features a full color pressed CD and full color tray-liner, all professionally designed and printed with 32 score tracks and a running time of 58:16 minutes. Malevolence is a very satisfying horror film score. The variation of different themes is quite interesting, as the film moves from action oriented at the beginning to classic horror toward the end, and all blend together perfectly. Stevan Mena effectively blends the styles of different horror film score composers such as John Carpenter and Harry Manfredini to add body to this score. I cannot help but feel this compositional comparison is intentional given that there is such a strong reference in Malevolence to horror films from that era and it is especially noteworthy to add the comparison between Mena and Carpenter given both wrote, directed, and scored independent horror films. I have purchased a great many horror scores over the years and this is one that holds up against the best synth horror scores. The packaging additionally is extremely nice - all vivid color and great CD art! I give this film score a BIG thumbs up!
