Unparalleled quality,

This review is from: MAM-A Gold - DVD-R ( G ) - 4.7 GB 8x - gold - jewel case - storage media - 10 pack (Electronics)
A review of literature available on the internet convinces me that the fabrication of MAM-A disks is not exceeded anywhere else. The Phthalocyanin dye is the highest performance dye available. The gold refelective layer is as good as it gets, and the Diamond Coat Finish provides resistance to scratches. So, how well do they work? I have a pretty standard computer with DVD burner. The disks have been flawless. I haven't lost a single disk and they play on everything I've got. This is an outstanding product. Just use some common sense in where you store them. It's a small price to pay for knowing that your critical data/pictures/music will be there many many years into the future.

I did some research on CDs and DVDs for my job, and I discovered that your average commercial-quality CD or DVD will only hold data for 20 years at most, and much less if they aren't handled with great care. Data on hard drives will degrade over time as well, so you can't depend on that for long term data storage. Think photos of your kids here, folks. Have you backed up your photos lately, and are you sure that backup will still be good in 10 years? These babies are rated to hold data for over 100 years! They have a special, inert chemical dye, and the reflective layer is 100% pure gold. Seriously, the layer is thin enough to see through. The technology has been around for a relatively long time, so it is mature. I think every DVD burner you can buy supports it, and it has gone through all kinds of tests to prove that it actually works. There are a couple of other companies that second-source the technology, but these are the guys who invented it. It's easy, it's cheap, and it the longest lasting backup media for your really important data that you can buy. What's to think about? Buy it already!

Might want to make sure you can write DVD-R first. I found my XP will only write +R but my Vista will do both.

The listing doesn't indicate the quantity of disks - which is 10 (ASIN: B000LZDZG0); each with a jewel case. Hard to find small quantities of MAM-A gold archival DVDs for this price (~$2.00 ea) - usually you have to buy a spool of 50 and then they don't come with jewel cases. Even though the write speed is listed as 8X, a sticker on the wrapping of each case suggests using 4X for a more reliable burn. I have burned about 30 disks with only one failure.

I've been using these discs for DVD/R fulfillment on wedding photography for the last 2 years. Bottom line? never had a media failure. This is for myself or my clients. Using 'standard' DVD-Rs I could expect a sizeable percentage of replacements, and as a result had to ensure I maintained every client's digital imagery so I could provide a replacement should it be required. Since a good portion of the DVDs went via mail or UPS, I had no way of predicting what temp. extremes the discs might encounter --for example, once a client was out of town when it got delivered, and the disc sat in her mailbox curbside for a week of 100+ S. Gaorgia summer weather. She apologized, and I shipped another 'standard' DVD out to her. But as I said, since I've been using these, I simply do NOT have failures. I've used 100+ of these, and have a 0% rate of failures. To say I'm thrilled with their quality so far is an understatement, and the fact that they are archivally rated at 100-300+ years means I don't expect any failures either. At ~$2/disc, I'm sold.

Have burned some pictures to these that I don't want to lose. So far they have performed well and are doing what they should. Long time storage is what I was after. Thanks

Good DVD-R for archiving all those important files. Works fine with both my iMac G5 and HP WIndows 7 laptop. Never had any problems. Also made in the USA.

I'm trying to back up movies that I took on vacation (JVC Camcorder) and loaded in the Everio Media Browser software by Pixela. I can't make these disks work. I suspect the slow speed (8X) is a hang up, but Pixela can't help. Their program doesn't offer a speed setting, so nothing to do but watch the error message come up. I'm not a computer expert, but just a user, however, some hint that this could be a problem would have been nice.

I really like the picture quality on these discs. I bought these to see if they where better than the Maxell DVD-R discs that I normally use. I think the two are very close in picture quality, but the price of Maxell cost less. For longevity the extra cost for the MAM-A disc would be well worth it.(I also bought a box of, Verbatim archival grade DVD-R disc. The picture quality was very poor.) |
