5.0 out of 5 stars These DVD disks will outlast me! No problems on a Mac.

This review is from: MAM-A (Mitsui) Gold Archive 8x DVD-R with no logo in bulk - 50 Count (Electronics)
I did a good deal of research online, looking for archival quality DVD media that would last longer than standard DVD media. From what I've read, "preliminary testing" suggests these gold archival quality DVDs will last a hundred years. By contrast, standard DVD media varies in longevity, on the order of perhaps 5-25 years, depending upon the environment and manufacturer (and the average user can't accurately predict how long a given standard DVD will last). I selected MAM-A (formerly Mitsui)'s Gold Archive DVD-R media to store my electronic medical records, where longevity is very important.

I burned 4 of these DVD-R disks using Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Apple's Disk Utility at 8x speed with no problems, on a Power Mac G5 (Quad). I use the factory DVD drive that came with the Mac. All 4 passed verification of the burn.

Excellent product.

Although rated at 8X, it is best to burn at a slower speed to reduce the number of possible errors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD's, March 17, 2008

These dvd's are very dependable are are great for archiving purposes. The data is supposed to last longer than the material they are made of. Leave them blank. Only label the jewel case for maximum longevity.

I have a background in pro audio and used to sell these back when they were way more expensive. Now as a professional photographer, this is the ONLY brand that I trust to do my DVD-R gold disc archives of my work. Research this brand on the internet and you will see why it's the only brand out there that deserves your trust. I also VERY VERY VERY rarely burn a bad disc or "coaster" with this brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product, Amazon has best price, February 20, 2011

As a pro photographer, only the best archival DVD's will do. I have read the specifications on this product and have been using the product for a number of years and feel that it is the best archival DVD that money can buy. For each job, I burn a DVD which goes to a bank vault. I then burn another one that is kept at the studio in the client's file. When it was time for me to reorder this product, I searched for the lowest cost for the identical product. Amazon had a price equal to a number of other suppliers but when I added in the shipping, I saved $18 by ordering from Amazon. The product arrived quickly and safely.

I love this disc. I've created thousands of DVDs and CDs over the last 20 years and these never develop any errors or data loss -- or at least very VERY little. This can't be said about other DVD brands with aluminum reflective layers and such. I have found 3 errors on a total of hundreds of these gold discs. Most other brands are bad and devloping errors within a year. I can't use a computer program to copy home movies, but rather need to do it manually, and if there are too many errors, I can't do it at all. I just end up with a coaster. Please do yourself a favor. If it's worth making a memory, it's worth preserving it. At two bucks a disc, I can go for that. DO YOURSELF THE FAVOR OF SAVING THE MEMORIES. My hard drive crashed. The same week, my backup crashed. I called Backblaze. They said that they had not been backing up my drive for a year! Thank heaven I had most of it saved on gold DVDs, at least the most important stuff.

1. This is not a one size fits all DVD, simply because of the cost. However, if you want a DVD for archival purposes (ex backing up photos etc...) then this is the only choice you should think of. Now, I haven't lived for a hundred years, but I'm fairly confident that this product will deliver on it's promise of stability over the years. I've used other standard DVDs, even the "silver" DVDs and after several years, when I would go back to open up a photo, several of the images would be corrupted or the disc would be readable by one drive but not by another. Thankfully, I've never had such issues with the MAM-A gold discs.
2. Thus if you want the best for archival purposes, this is a definite no brainer.

Gold coated disks are the best way to archive your photos. Lab tested to last approximately 100 years they outlast any other type of recordable disks.

The product could not be used with my rather standard setup ie MacOSX on Apple G5 with a Pioneer Burner. I was told by the vendor that I MIGHT get it to work by downloading software from the web. It turned out that the download was not a simple everyday variety but required a sophistication beyond my modest abilities. ( MY local Apple vendor and repair facility advised me not to use the download. They did not want to try it as well). The product vendor was reluctant to provide a refund. I might add that they dragged their feet for over about a two month period. Eventually they said they would provide a refund less a restocking fee. I put the issue in dispute with MC.
