Book Description

October 23, 2003
Manawydan explores universal issues of good and evil, cruelty and kindness, pain and forgiveness against the specific backdrops of tribal Africa, the slave trade, and supernatural occurrences in modern-day San Francisco. Through eerie circumstances in the Bermuda Triangle, Captain Mason and his crew locate the lost slave ship Manawydan.

While the vessel undergoes renovations in San Francisco, turning it into a tourist attraction, the book delves into the ship’s horrific history in general and its life-altering impact on two slaves, Oba and Iloree, in particular. When Mason and his close friend Tank start searching into their own pasts, an ancient prophecy has a second chance to right the horrific wrongs perpetrated generations ago.

Taboo subjects of our time, e.g., slavery, sex, and religion, are woven together in Manawydan. This novel interlaces ancient African legends with historical truths about slave processing and contemporary concepts of capitalism, greed and alternative lifestyles. It expounds on issues of our past and our future; worlds we understand and those we cannot comprehend, and exalts the power of knowledge and forgiveness to heal old wounds.

Manawydan’s combination of fantasy, horror, and harsh reality provokes thought while providing an outstandingly enlightened, and entertaining reading experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but . . ., July 29, 2004

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Manawydan (Paperback)
From the reviews, I hoped for an engaging story. However, this is mediocre high-school level writing. Among other things, the narrative is stilted and choppy, there is no character development, and there has obviously been no editing. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because of evidence of research and creative ideas. Take some writing classes, La Ertes! You've got good ideas, but you don't have a clue what to do with them! This is the first time I've been so badly led astray by Amazon reader reviews!

4.0 out of 5 stars A WINNER!, December 16, 2003
This review is from: Manawydan (Paperback)
I was impressed with LaErtes' ability to create several threads and tie them all together in the end. I felt that all of his characters and all of the ideas that surfaced earlier in the novel were accounted for by the last chapter.

Manawydan has addressed important issues and suggested a solution, i.e., forgiveness. This places the book on a higher level.

The characters were well developed. LaErtes gives sufficient history to make each one three dimensional. Even Char and Bri came to life, and I deeply felt for them in the end. Also, using them as the means to enlighten Mason, et al. about the situation on the ship was a good move.

Weaving the tragic history of slavery, which is far worse than most people today realize, into the text of the novel is excellent. The chapters where LaErtes describes Gorée Island and life on a slave ship feel a bit like a history book. And the passages at the Queen's Ball Gala may be too graphic for mainstream fiction.

Overall, MANAWYDAN was an EXCELLENT read. I give LâErtes two thumbs up!

LaErtes will soon be a force on the literary scene.
