1.0 out of 5 stars Clipper not powerful enough to trim hair
I was very excited to order the mangroomer, it seemed like the perfect solution to a long time problem. I have hair on my back. The upper back is quite easy to get to, and I use a regular trimmer there. However, the middle back is very difficult to reach. The mangroomer looks like a great idea, and it is contructed well enough, though it seems a bit light, however, I...

The first time I used this product, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is not easy to master and the first time out can be frustrating. On the other hand, it is a unique and helpful tool. If you are too modest to ask your significant other (or your kids - not!) to give that hairy back of yours a buzz cut, you should give this a try. There are several challenges, but all can be overcome with care and practice.

First, read the directions. The main guidance provided is to shave against the way the hair is growing - the "grain" of the hair. Most of your back hair grows down, so that means shaving "up" by extending the arm on the product and pulling it slowly up your back. However, that is not the only direction that your back hair grows. Anyone who has tried this product now knows the several directions that the long-ignored back hair can grow.

Next, don't get hung up on the red splotches that you will see (in the mirror) on your back when you first start using this. They go away real fast. Your back is just not used to coming in contact with something this sharp. And it is not dangerously sharp, just irritating sharp at first.

Further, once you get a feel for this, I recommend NOT looking into the mirror but use this like you would use a back-scrubber or loofah for washing your back -- visualize it on your back and use long "up" strokes. Doing it by "feel" will help keep the cutting edge flush against your skin to get a cleaner cut and avoid the red marks that you make when the cutting edge is slanted against your skin.

Using a hand mirror and the bathroom (or other fixed) mirror is the only way to get started. However, everything goes backwards in the 2-mirror arrangement. If you try to adjust the cutter by looking in the mirror/s as you turn it, you'll likely end up twisting it more the wrong way. Hence the advice to use it like a back brush, don't always be looking in the mirror.

Best to use before taking a shower. That way the cut hair that remains on your back will be washed off.

And finally, be ready for the challenge of doing the side of your back that is the same as the hand you favor - right-handed guys will have a much easier time getting to the left side of their backs, and vice versa. But with patience and practice, I believe you can do both sides well.

It is best to check out your back in the mirror every few weeks or so to keep the forest down. One of the reasons people get frustrated with this product is that the first time they use it is with long-ignored hair that is, well, long. Regular use will not only give you practice, but you'll be trimming smaller shrubs.

This is a handy gadget that will, over time, become part of your routine. It is not perfect, but it is lightweight, cuts well when flush against the surface of your skin and more manageable than an electric shaver (or razor - gasp!) taped to a broom handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, great product design, works well, September 28, 2006

This is the most impressive product design I have seen in a long time. The engineering is amazing -- kudos to the team that put this together.

It does a good job, although it does irritate my skin. I have a hard time getting the right angle. "Works best with a 3-way mirror" -- now that's funny. Most people do not have a 3 way mirror in their house, and I am not about to go shave my back at J.C. Penny haha.

I use a handheld mirror and my bathroom mirror. It works well. Even though it irritated a lot, it didn't cut, and as I learn how to do the angles better, I will have less irritation.

I am surprised that this doesn't mention shaving the neck. I used it on my neck and it did a good job. It also did a good job on the shoulders, upper arms, and underarms.

After placing the order I regretted it -- I thought it would be $40 down the drain, but I was happily wrong -- this product is EXCELLENT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Product!, November 8, 2006

I ordered this product yesterday after reading everyone's reviews here. In my last relationship my girlfriend use to nair my back for me...but alas all good things come to an end. So when I saw this I thought it was a God send...and sure enough once I used it it was.

The product is light and made out of plastic but don't let that fool you. You will thank the makers if you have a lot of back hair, like me, cause it took a bit to do the whole thing. The blade is awesome and I even used it to shave my chest (also very hairy) and it did a great job!

A tip, try going back and forth with the blade instead of in just one direction (i.e. Kinda like a vacuum)

I am really pleased with this product and thank everyone here for helping me make my decision. Sometimes you order something and don't have any user opinions and it is a shot in the dark with some products!

1.0 out of 5 stars Clipper not powerful enough to trim hair, September 8, 2006

This review is from: MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I was very excited to order the mangroomer, it seemed like the perfect solution to a long time problem. I have hair on my back. The upper back is quite easy to get to, and I use a regular trimmer there. However, the middle back is very difficult to reach. The mangroomer looks like a great idea, and it is contructed well enough, though it seems a bit light, however, I found it to be well made. The clipper however, would not clip my hair. I tried it from all angles, slowly, flat and alligned to my back, against the grain, with the grain, sideways, but the trimmer was not very powerful. I used my regular trimmer over the same areas that I could reach and it took the hair right off.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend this product. Though I commend the innovative design, the clipper itself is too weak to cut hair. Also, it was a bit painful to my skin, perhaps that is because it was just grabbing at the hairs and not clipping them.

I will return it to Amazon and post an update as to their service. I expect a full refund, given that I tried the product and it does not work as Amazon advertised.

I commend the designers for their innovative idea, and only hope that they better design the clipper in the future. I really would like this to work realiably.

Thank you.

EDIT:

I returned my mangroomer and got a full refund from Amazon (minus shipping of course). I would recommend you try the product even if it didn't work for me, given that the most you will lose is shipping. I hope the designers come out with a new design because I will definitely try it then.

I previously posted the review below, and contacted Mangroomer directly for a refund. I received a same-day reply from the company.
Mangroomer support apologized for the product they claimed was defective.
They sent out a new product via FedEx same day free of charge. I've finally tried it out and it seems to work perfectly, with none of the problems I was experiencing before. Apparently some of these trimmers are defective -
I'm not the only reviewer who posted similar complaints. However, the product support is great and the folks at Manpower will bend over backwards to make sure you are satisfied. So if you encounter a problem with your
Mangroomer, you should contact the Mangroomer folks directly [...]

1.0 out of 5 stars what the..?, December 21, 2008

This review is from: MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver (Health and Beauty)
cheap construction? check. but the relatively low price forgives this.

innovative design? check! now all this thing has to do is work a LITTLE BIT and it'll get a 5-star from me, but..

complete unability to shave hair? check. what the hell? who tested this thing? even on my sparsest and thinnest body hair, this thing is INCREDIIBLY painful to use and totally unable to cut even a reasonable amount of hair.

if i had some peach fuzz on my arms, this would probably be fine, but i'm a man. we're men. if there's hair on our backs, it's probably not little girly hair--it might be thick and coarse. or even KIND OF thick and coarse. if this sounds like you, avoid this product. i ignored the warnings of others and wasted $40--i have not been able to use this product beyond the first 5 minutes of wasted time. a painful experiment. =/

This is an excellent alternative to shaving, waxing, or cream-based method. The key is to take your time and work slowly. Once you get the hang of it, you will wonder how you ever did it before. Order it!

5.0 out of 5 stars My back hair is gone - Finally!, September 2, 2006
By
This review is from: MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I can't tell you how excited I was to first see the MANGROOMER. I can finally shave off my back hair by myself at home, no more will I ever have to ask my girlfriend again!

I first bought the Bodygroom and it has been really great for my "lower" regions but it didn't work for my back. First, it didn't reach anywhere and second when I got my girl to use it on my back for me - the foil part pulls a little when it shaves and caused me insane ingrown hairs which ended up looking like pimples and hurt - which totally sucked.

I heard Howard Stern and Scott Ferrall on Sirius Radio always going nuts and talking about the new MANGROOMER and how awesome this new product was. I got to tell you, they were right and I am sooo happy I listened to them and got it. It is really great!

The thing is actually pretty cool because it is small when shut and then when you want to use it opens up to almost 2 feet long. That is the best for me because I am totally inflexible and tall, but now I can reach everywhere on my back and shave it totally smooth without straining. That is key.

The blade is really sweet too with its wide blade so it doesn't take long to do my whole back at all. Also, like I said before the blade is perfect because it doesn't cause me any ingrown hairs which can be a nightmare if you know what I mean.

It is nice to know that back hair no longer has to be difficult or expensive to deal with and I never have to get waxed again - that was one of the most horrid, painful experiences in my life. Anyhow, MANGROOMER is the best new product to hit men's grooming stuff in a long time. Trust me, I try them all. Hope this helps you guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars loving this shaver!, December 11, 2006
This review is from: MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver (Health and Beauty)
I just received the mangroomer from my girlfriend over the weekend. At first I had no idea what it was or how it worked. However, I was really suprised when I saw it lets you shave off all your back hair by your lonesome. It works awesome.

I have never been one to get waxed or lasered since I think it is way too painfull and I really don't feel like going to massage parlor, gym, spa etc. However, if I knew about this shaver before I would have bought it asap as I hate having my back hair with a passion. It is one of those things you just hate that you have every time you see a guy who has none and doesn't know how great he's got it.

Anyhow, I used the shaver in my bathroom and was impressed how long it got when you extend the black handle portion of it. I seriously could reach everywhere on my whole back. However, it was a little strange to hit each area that easy in the beginning. But after I opened up all my mirros to get a better look at my back, I was better at shaving it and after a while found out the best way. I would recommend doing it in front of a 3 or 2 way mirror if you have one.

All in all, it is awesome to get this shaver and that I can now shave my back. It really makes a huge difference for me as I always hated having back hair. I think any guy with it would love to get this shaver and their girlfriends will as well.

This is a great gift for any guy who has back hair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, no more back hair, March 13, 2008
By
Paul (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This product has worked very well for me for the past 6 months of use. I have always been a guy who probably would be mistaken for a bear from behind with his shirt off, so I couldn't ask for a better product. It works great, though sometimes you have to do a couple passes over the same area, but it is pretty effortless. Overall good product and a smart buy for the body hair challenged.
