MARK OF THE DEVIL is a grim, gruesome -yet rather silly- exploitation film from 1970. It concerns the religious mania known as "witch hunting" in the 1600s. Much bloody torture ensues in order to extract "confessions", using enhanced interrogation techniques. It stars an impossibly young Udo Keir (FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN) as witch-hunter's apprentice, Count Christian von Meruh. The Count is a more... er, fair-minded hunter of succubi. Meruh saves a beautiful woman named Vanessa (Olivera Katerina) from the wicked Albino (Reggie Nalder- THE DEAD DON'T DIE, 'SALEM'S LOT, ZOLTAN: HOUND OF DRACULA). Love blooms. Alas, the joy can't last, as the Albino relocates Vanessa. If that's not bad enough, Lord Cumberland (Herbert Lom- MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE, ASYLUM, THE DEAD ZONE) arrives to bring down the law. More torturous deaths occur. This bodes ill for Vanessa. After witnessing a murder, Meruh begins to question Cumberland in particular, and witch-hunting in general. While most of the gore is fairly tame, the infamous "tongue scene" is a bit gross. MOTD belongs next to WITCHFINDER GENERAL and CRY OF THE BANSHEE on any sub-genre shelf...

This was actually the first film I watched in the theater, when I was 10. I'm sure it left scars because I didn't dare watch it again until now and I am 50. The effects, which were terrifying back then, are rather lame now but the tongue scene still gets me.
Unfortunately, I neglected to save that stupid barf bag (that was handed out at the door) which I'm sure would be worth some cold cash now.

I seen it when I was a kid at the drive in and wanted to watch it 30 years later to see exactly what it was about. For some reason, it resonated with me back then, but after watching it, I must have been a pretty deranged kid.

bad acting, so-so make-up & effects, and it was edited. looked like a precursor to "Flesh for Frankenstein". not worth the rental.

If that makes sense. Worth of a remake and an Arrow restoration, the latter of which is coming soon. Recommended.
