The Moschettas believe that a good marriage isn't just a source of emotional and sexual companionship, but that it is a "sacred place" where two people's higher spiritual selves come together. They say that most married people share only their egos, which are selfish, vulnerable, and in need of constant validation. By using such techniques as meditation, visualization, and a variety of spiritual exercises, however, couples can access and share their higher selves so that "the sacred in you touches the sacred in your partner." Readers with troubled marriages may find that this advice brings them closer to their mates, while those whose marriages are essentially healthy can use the tools to take their relationships to a higher plane altogether.

Marriage counselors and editors of the popular "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" column in Ladies Home Journal, the Moschettas contend that marriage is a "sacred" place, worthy of constant attention. Elevating one's marriage to this stature takes insight and practice, and the authors, who read their own work, guide us through the use of exercises and techniques. These include remembering a special shared memory together, "witnessing" by writing down each time one's ego surfaces, and using code phrases to remind one another that negative emotions are evident. While these ideas seem noble, the approach is idealistic and swamped with such phrases as "your sacred self helps you to understand that anger is a spiritual warning signal." I found this book to be unlike other marriage fix-up books. It was well thought out and provided insights into what truly makes a good and satisfying marriage. It is a good guidebook into looking past your normal reactions to perhaps giveup on something that is worth keeping.
