A must...,

This review is from: MARSHALLTOWN The Premier Line 45 5 5-Inch by 2-1/2-Inch Pointing Trowel (Tools & Home Improvement)
The 45-5 is a must for any archaeologist. There are those who prefer the 6-inch 45-6, but I feel that model has too much flex, which can cause you to gouge your walls.
Whether you prefer the 45-5 or 45-6, Marshalltown (golden or not) is the way to go.

the archaeologist's best friend,

My Marshalltown has been used for over 13 years and other than being scuffed up and a bit smaller from repeated edge sharpening, still works as well as day one. There is a reason that this brand is the preference of many archaeologists.

I've used the 45-5 for over 30 years. I've thoroughly abused this trowel by using it underwater,
in hard-pan clay soils, and in very rocky soils. It has never failed me, which is important because trowels are not readily available throughout the world. After a couple of decades of use and resharpening, I find that I have removed so much metal that my 5" trowel is now a 3" trowel. I can't imagine using any other trowel. The 45-5 takes and holds an edge well and can withstand being sharpened on a grinding wheel. Simply put, the 45-5 is the archaeologist's best friend.

I love my marshalltown. Doing my field first school this semester and it has proven to be just as great as everyone described. Love it!

An old-style wooden handled Marshalltown is the only one for east cost archaeology. The Amazon price is a good one.

The 45-5 is really the tool to have for archaeology. I used mine for about 6 weeks of archaeological field school this summer, and while the crew had several broken trowels, all the marshalltowns weathered the storm and made it out in one piece. If other reviews are anything to go on, I'll have mine for quite some time.

Love this trowel! Takes some time to sharpen (only had a bastard file), but well worth it! I hope to use this trowel for years to come!
